The U.S. Abandoned Nuclear-Powered Missiles More Than 50 Years Ago

Popular Mechanics: Why the U.S. Abandoned Nuclear-Powered Missiles More Than 50 Years Ago

President Donald Trump says the U.S. has a missile like the one that killed seven in the Russian arctic. That's untrue, because the U.S. abandoned the idea decades ago.

Last week’s mysterious nuclear accident in Russia became even more mysterious as the government admitted that a small nuclear reactor had exploded, killing seven people.

Evidence is piling up that the incident is somehow related to Russia’s development of a nuclear-powered cruise missile, and President Donald Trump took to Twitter to state that the U.S. has a similar system. One problem: the U.S. looked into nuclear-powered cruise missiles more than half a century ago before rejecting them as impractical.

All of Russia's latest "doomsday" devices are so ridiculous and stupid, but no one in our media calls them out for it. No analyst speaks. Think of it.

"forever" flying missile. Ok sure, no one takes the "forever" literally, Putin perhaps meant months, years at a time (physically nothing does anything forever, not even our universe, but yeah whatever)..

on top, think of all the mechanical elements that would fail, and likely often fail, in such untested technology. And you have a nuclear reactor powering it. You saw what happened to the village right?

No one calls this idiot out, why? This ridiculous attempt of grandstanding. It exploded in Putin's face and our media is still like "ohh he's this 5D chess player", no he is not. He's just a thug who poisons people and shoots them in the back. There is no grand chess master here. He's a thug. And embarassing Russia on top

Earth circumference ~ 21,600 nautical mile.

"An ICBM can strike a target within a 10,000 km range in about 30 to 35 minutes. "

Unless you have enough of these special missiles for a first strike that prevents a counter strike, they are a waste of money.

Fly forever? All you need is the time to fly half the circumference, loiter time and time to zigzag perhaps.

Anything more than an hour or 3 is a waste.

You keep a nuclear propelled missile in the sky for over an hour and someone is bound to see it and get an itchy trigger figure themselves.

I hope Putin tries harder digging holes and filling them up.

Now now. Let's not be hasty, fellow posters. Think positively.

No fossil fuel propelled armaments = no CO2 = no global warming. Win win. We can destroy ourselves in cool comfort.
