The U.S. Navy's 2nd Fleet Has Just Turned A Year Old

Business Insider: The Navy's newest fleet just turned a year old — here's how it's been training for a new kind of fight

* August 24 marks one year since the US Navy reestablished its 2nd Fleet, which was deactivated in 2011 as part of a cost-saving and reorganizational effort.
* The world changed during those seven years, and the fleet has focused on preparing to operate high-end forces in contested spaces, writes fleet commander Vice Adm. Andrew Lewis.

One year ago in Norfolk, Virginia, aboard USS George H.W. Bush at the establishment ceremony for US 2nd Fleet, I directed the fleet to be ready to fight — ready to fight so that we do not have to.

The last time 2nd Fleet existed, the world looked very different than it does now: Today maritime superiority, vital to our national security, has been placed at risk by resurgent powers, namely Russia and China, seeking to supplant the US as the partner of choice around the world.
