These Are The 9 Nuclear-Armed Countries And Their 31 Allies That They Have Vowed To Defend

Business Insider: These are the 9 nuclear-armed countries and the 31 allies they've vowed to defend

* There are an estimated 13,885 nuclear weapons in the world, either stockpiled or retired.
* Last year, there were 14,465 weapons, but some 600 were retired or decommissioned in the last 12 months.
* It shows that total elimination is still a long-term goal, despite international efforts to rid the world of nukes.
* Scroll down for an overview of the world's nine nuclear-armed states, the number of weapons they have, and the 31 countries they've vowed to protect.

The number of nuclear weapons known to exist around the world today is steadily falling, but the fear that a country could one day unleash the most devastating weapon on Earth still persists.

The total number of nuclear weapons fell from 14,465 in 2018 to about 13,885 this year, according to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute's (SIPRI) 2019 yearbook, which was published in June.

It shows that while the international community is working toward the goal of reducing the number of nukes in the world, total elimination is still a long-term reality.

Until we can eradicate the ideological divide between certain specific super-powers, then there will always be nukes.

Just to be clear: if China were to attack Russia, I'd want us (NATO) to defend them. Our animosities are entirely political/by the ruling class. I know many Russians and they are exceptional people. Fun and smart. So I would not want them to be nuked unless they attack us unprovoked. And during the cold war many Russians have shown to be good people, admirable people. It is only the leadership we have issues with. i know it's not in a contract and perhaps surprising to some, but I think many Europeans and Americans think the same way. Even our movie culture reflects it ..we admire Russians that's why we let Sean Connery play a smart, tough Russian captain with heart..because that's what we really think of Russians. Not what cnn tells us. We never have been at conflict with the Russian people just the leaders and conflicting systems and people on all sides should be reminded of the cultural heritage we share with Russia. After years of Russia collusion talk we enter this quasi McCarthism Redux area and people just forget history. It's sad.

Equally - and people also forget that, we protected China from being nuked ones. This analysis that the US is the only country to have dropped the bomb and is therefore the least qualified to talk about it is nonsense and robs Americans of their humanity. And I say that being European/German. I know what the war was like and the thoughts on all sides about ending the war this way and saving people and I know the counter arguments. But to make this simplified analysis about Americans and paint them as warmongering is not true and we should not forget that either. Russia is famous for its saying "mother Russia doesn't start wars but it ends them" ,the same could be said about America after pearl harbour and the rise of the Japan empire. People forget and stereotype and it's dangerous. We should also not forget that China must be still pissed at Japan and the British empire ..opium wars for example

Let's each help remind us all during these times. Wnu post some China points what they think there arguments are. If ours hold, no harm in listening. Maybe I'm wrong and they don't bully half of SE Asia with military and paramilitary boasts. Maybe xi didn't swear the army to him personally. Maybe he didn't arm north Korea which threatens us -in videos! - with nuclear destruction of our cities. I'm happy to be proven wrong but let's be clear about our wants: freedom for all, including us and the Russians and Chinese people. Dignity for all including the Russian and Chinese people. Fair access to markets for all.

These are the key pillars, right? I'm thinking many Russians and Chinese agree. And their leaders are afraid that these ideas win. And they think they are western ideas. Some maybe, but the dignity of the individual is a lesson well learned in Russia. And the Chinese are waking up to it too. No one wants to live under a 1984 nightmare big brother scenario that is as cultural economic and political war /conflict with all its neighbours. And China and to some extend Russia - under Xi and Putin - is. Or am I wrong? :)

"I know what the war was like"

You do? That would make you 79 or older. Or you learned 2nd hand from parents, siblings etc.
I have relatives and in-laws that experienced the war from all sides.

I agree with you post 7:00 PM.

If we have a war, I so the excitement for it a decade ago in Beijing. A minority to be sure, but when it comes to people the tail can swing the dog.

I hate it when non-native or liberal trolls try to disguise themselves. Get it right or find a new job.

It is: "Nuke a whale for Christ."
