U.K. Prime Minister Johnson Returns From Talks In Germany And France On Brexit



Daily Mail: Victory for Boris? Prime Minister appears in triumphant mood after Emmanuel Macron backs Angela Merkel's plan to give him 30 days to come up with an alternative to the backstop

* The PM has returned from talks in Germany and France having made better progress towards leaving the EU with a deal than many had predicted
* Boris was seen raising his hands over his head as he returned to Downing Street
* Today in Paris Macron suggested he was open to hearing what the UK could come up with to replace an Irish backstop he called 'indispensable'
* Yesterday Angela Merkel said if the UK could come up with a satisfactory alternative in 30 days a deal might still be possible

Boris Johnson raised his arms high in the air in an apparent expression of triumph this evening on his return from unexpectedly encouraging talks with European counterparts.

Both Emmanuel Macron today, and Angela Merkel yesterday, gave the British PM a glimmer of hope of pulling off his plan to leave the EU with a deal which does not include the hated Irish backstop.

Glimpsed as his ministerial car pulled up to Downing Street today following lunch with the French President in Paris the PM was seen to hold both raised fists aloft.
