Has The Peace Process In Afghanistan Collapsed?

CNN: Trump overruled advisers, VP on Taliban Camp David meeting

The pine-shaded cabins at Camp David have hosted secret peace summits between Middle Eastern leaders and high-stakes gatherings of major heads of state. For President Donald Trump, the mountainside retreat offered visions of another diplomatic coup: clandestine talks between US, Afghan and Taliban officials that could end America's longest war.

Even opposition from within his own national security team, including Vice President Mike Pence, could not deter Trump from pressing forward with his plan to host Taliban leaders at the rural presidential getaway.

Trump eventually scrapped the event after a Taliban car bomb killed a US soldier and 11 others last week. But that decision came after heated debate within the administration over the venue for the summit -- an outgrowth of larger, more substantial disagreements over the wisdom of negotiating with the Taliban at all.

WNU Editor: A U.S. - Taliban agreement on a U.S military withdrawal from Afghanistan is definitely not going to happen now. I am sure the overall peace process will continue, but I will be surprised if anything will be decided until after next year's U.S. Presidential election.

No treaty with Taliban. Just announce you are leaving. Then go...Taliban do not want nor will they honor any treaty. They want us out. We want us out. Solution: Leave

I wonder how happy rank and file Taliban will be when they learn that their "senior negotiators" were about to settle a peace deal at Camp David - with the great satan.

(while they're out there fighting and dying for the cause)

It'll surprise you that the majority of Americans trust President Trump when it comes to these negotiations. They trust him far more than they trusted Obama. For instance when he released five major Taliban prisoners for the return of one traitor.

Obama/Biden had two terms to extricate the US from Afghanistan. They failed. Trump has moved the process for more along in 3 years than they did in 8.

So as an American I'm not too excited one way or the other about Taliban negotiators coming to the US. Not nearly as excited as Taliban fighters will be at learning that their representatives were about to have tea and cheeses in the US.

Its likely that these men were exposed in Trump's tweet and have far more to lose than Trump does for these negotiations failing.

cut the silliness and just leave that country...love Trump. Hate this or that one. Americans are dying and for what?
ps: Americans do NOT trust Trump...or you do little reading if you think otherwise

It wouldn't be the first visit by Taliban leaders to America.

They learned then what dealing with America was.

Towards the end of the US involvement in Vietnam and discussions on how to leave "gracefully" or perhaps even "gratefully" one suggestion was to declare victory, pull out and have a victory parade back home.
