President Donald Trump on Saturday tweeted that he had invited Afghanistan's Taliban leaders to secretly meet with him at Camp David on Sunday, but canceled the visit after the insurgent group said it was behind a recent attack in Kabul that killed an American soldier and 11 other people.
Had the meeting gone ahead, it would have come just days before the annual commemoration of the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington, carried out by Al Qaeda while they were sheltering under the protection of the Taliban.
A suicide blast car bomb killed Sgt. 1st Class Elis Angel Barreto Ortiz of Morovis, Puerto Rico, a Romanian service member and at least 10 civilians near the headquarters of Afghanistan's international military force and the American embassy on Thursday.

WHY TRUMP WILL NOT WIN THE TRADE WAR
Parrot,
You can have a trade deficit, if you can print money. WSJ actually ran an article or editorial, or opinion piece saying it was great getting engines, generators and other goods for the mere printing of money. It was hard for me to disagree at the time, but now I have the knowledge.
You can only print money, if you are a reserve currency.
If you print money and your country's money is a not a reserve currency, you have high inflation and hyper inflation until the country's government collapses. People get hurt.
No country's money lasts as a reserve currency forever. You cannot show one concrete example otherwise.
China is trying to dethrone the US dollar as the world's reserve currency. Soros is too. Soros or someone referencing him had a piece in "Foreign Affairs" around 2004, which was about making a basket of currencies. I did not like the idea at the time, because Soros is a manipulative fool.
The one aspect I do like about it now, is that it would force the American government to have balanced budgets and no humongous trade deficits
Once again PhD parrot proves that it is semi-illiterate. It is cursed to be glib of tongue and ignorant of so many words and concepts of which it speaks. PhD parrot is ignorant of calculus, economics, optics and much more. But it has white privilege.
"ah, the name calling mommy's boy, "
Such irony. The parrot calls people names all the time.
Yet not one word on how a reserve currency works, because parrot does not know.
It would be great if Fred for once stayed in the thread topic. Nonstop Trump hate is tiresome. It’s now to the point of rooting for America’s enemies and adversaries. Rooting for true US to sustain damage, for its people to be hurt, just to destroy Trump.
It’s petty and it’s unpatriotic.
This cancellation has been a smack in the face for the talibs. Forward momentum suddenly crashed. And after a calculated[?]stunt for the international press to show they were strong and winning.
I very much doubt the moo-lahs had given a cancelation much consideration if any.
I think this is a bit of genius on the part of Trump. Last year the cease fire was shown to have more than a little support from both sides to the chagrin of the moo-lahs. Hopes up again and now a sudden setback. No prayer rugs on the plush, clean carpets of the Ritz Hilton.
The 1968 Tet offense was one of the largest military miscalculations in history. Viet cong destroyed and the NVN forced to increase their young men's participation in an increasingly unpopular war. In 1969 they tried again. Where I was stationed they tried to overrun Bien Hoa, a huge base near Saigon.
For once they managed to damage some equipment in a large barrage of surprisingly inaccurate and mostly unimpressive 122MM rockets. Unfortunately the remains of the NVA battalion assigned to capture the base after the barrage were a day late and the next evening were discovered near the wire perimeter. I witnessed the beginning when a cobra gunship spotted them near the wire perimeter and opened up.
I have a surrender leaflet dropped on the remnants of that battalion the next morning. It has a picture of the commanding NVA colonel and his comments, in his handwriting, to his surviving troops, 350 of the 600 who started out, he says. He speaks of their being told to bring their can openers for the mountains of supplies they would capture, their losses from B-52's on the Ho Chi Mihn trail, the locals not supporting them. They were lost and a day behind schedule when the gunship spotted them. They holed up in a cinderblock village built for refugees and the slaughter went on all the next day.
But hey! They got some headlines. I well know the US press never saw that leaflet but instead emphasized the fact that these emaciated, dressed in rags, victims of Giap's military genius, who was let go after Tet, had persevered and attacked S. Vietnam. The reality is that they were probably put in a new bulldozed hole just outside the base perimeter to join the 300 who were put in a bulldozed hole after Tet of '68. I saw the first hole. A roommate pointed about where it was. No marker, no nothing. Back then just a bare spot on the face of the earth, the few seconds of movie film I took of it probably faded away now in the desert heat where I live. The Great Disappeared, maybe still enthusiastically clapping in glorious thanks to our esteemed leaders in all their wisdom.
An ounce of image was worth a pound of performance to the US press and political "leadership" back then. I don't know if this blunder was even given a line in the LA times. My grandmother never mentioned it, unlike other pinpricks the Times reported while I was there.
And so with the evil Trump's sudden turnabout, consider the impact on Mamud, the forgotten man who does the dying. If he is still alive after the truce last year and who angered his leadership by a display of war weariness, what does he think? The family, the wife he wanted,
the children he may never have or see.
Very thoughtful analysis, Roger.
social media really works in dividing Americans
ok for you to call names, nonstop, and when someone returns in your manner you think you are so clever in pointing out that bad names were used etc?tough tittie
I post, yes, I do post, comments that veer sharply away from the article posted but I do that ONLY when comments denounce those who are Democrats, liberals, not as indivduals but the millions who did not vote for Moron-in-chief...aregue, present links, fact, ok...but if you plan to be the usual stupido driven person, then, yes, I will dribble down on this page as you have done.
HAIL,SATAN
Fred,
Actually I did not call you a 'name'. I called you parrot. You have called yourself parrot often.
You have also called yourself Philoctetes, Capt Hook, and many other names. It's a childish game for you.
PS: You are boring. You are not very well educated, semi-literate at best.
Good post Roger
Knowledgeable and thoughtful, honest post, Roger.
