Turkey’s Erdogan Hints At Pursuing Nuclear Weapons (Again)

Washington Examiner: 'Leverage in every crisis': Turkey’s Erdogan hints at pursuing nuclear weapons

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan hinted at an interest in acquiring nuclear weapons, telling the United Nations that it is unjust for the weapons to be possessed only by major powers.

“It bothers us like anyone else that the weapons of mass destruction are used as leverage in every crisis instead of their total elimination,” Erdoğan said Tuesday during the annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly in New York. “The position of nuclear power should either be forbidden for all or permissible for everyone.”

I think Erdogan has a valid point.. it is a bit of hypocrisy that we have a bunch of nations (USA, Russia, UK, France, Pakistan, India, China, North Korea, Israel, maybe couple more) who have nukes (either own, or on a shared basis, then this would also include Germany), while telling all other nations "no you cannot have this".

IF those nations (and some include my home country/countries) who have them would have never been at war, and would be pacifists all around I would say "hey OK, that's fair, those guys never have been in a fight, we are all good that you all have nukes and the other warmongering countries don't"... BUT... facts are facts, and almost all nations above have been in decades or centuries of warfare.. e.g.

UK - colonized and conquered much of the world, from India to Africa, to China

USA - at continuous war (yes, yes, for Freedoms, I get it, but still)

Germany - brought us two world wars, sure, sure I get it Hitler was Austrian, and one of the wars was really because of contractual law/guarantees in defence, but still..

France - bunch of colonizers and head removers too (yes, I know, now they are known for weird dialects but they used to behead people, quite a lot)

Pakistan - tons of nukes and not really that secure. Always listed as number one concern of the Pentagon when it comes to proliferation

India - always at constant near-war with Pakistan and China

Russia - don't even start. They have killed more people than Nazi Germans, BUT they hide behind "victory day" parades - how sick is that? Still not grown up enough to admit to what they've done. On top, they recently invaded Ukraine, Georgia and are friends with Butcher Assad

China -- tens of millions killed, of their own people. And bullying everyone in the South China sea. Almost at war with Vietnam, India in last couple years. On top they have a million Urdus in prison/reeducation camps/concentration camps right now and have stolen TRILLIONS(!) from the international community.

North Korea - killed millions of their own, and hundreds today, while I write these lines.

Israel - I somewhat get it, but they too have killed quite a few people. I probably feel safest with them having the bomb, as they haven't killed millions or tried to colonize, but it is fair to say that Iran cannot feel safe (and they shouldn't, after threatening to wipe Israel of the map).

So to sum up: I think no one should have nukes. BUT, as we are all a bunch of savages/crazed people, and unless a true leader (or event) brings us together, I think we will just all get nukes.. there must also be quite a few countries that have nukes from the Russian black market when the Soviet Union collapsed. Technology like this, that everyone wants for safety/power is just too hard to control/forbid.. you have to address the reasons why we all want them, and until that is done, you will not get rid of nukes, unfortunately
