Was This Weekend's Attack On Saudi Arabia's Oil Facilities It's Pearl Harbor Moment?

Yahoo News/Bloomberg: Saudi Arabia Has No Excuse for Its Military Failures

President Donald Trump has declared that, once it has been verified that Iran was indeed responsible for last weekend’s attack on major Saudi Arabian oil facilities, the U.S. is “locked and loaded.” To do what, exactly, is unclear.

Trump has previously threatened the Islamic Republic with “overwhelming force,” but only if it attacked American targets. Last month, he ordered — and then canceled — an American bombing run against Iranian sites, but that was in response to the downing of an American drone.

Trump’s close circle is now bereft of its fiercest proponent of bombing Iran — freshly fired John Bolton — and his remaining political and military advisers will likely urge caution. With the United Nations General Assembly opening in New York this week, Trump will have an ideal platform from which to unleash rhetorical fusillades, instead of real bombs, against Iran. Perhaps that will satisfy him.

From a US perspective, this is not a Pearl Harbor Moment. Saudi is not a US territory. There were not 2400 dead Americans. We did not lose a fleet of Navy ships and this will likely not lead to a World War.

From the Saudi perspective it could be similar to Pear Harbor. I guess... Except that the number of dead (that we know of) is far fewer and the facility that was destroyed is easily rebuilt and defended - with possibly the Israeli Iron Dome system. The parallel would be the magnitude of military humiliation and the inability to anticipate and/or prevent an attack on their most prized national asset.

But, as we saw today there was no 800 point crash in the DJIA. There was no minute to minute breathless coverage of the massive fire in Saudi. No Situation Room drama from the White House. And no rapid troop mobilizations or panicked Navy ship movements.

Iran must be very disappointed.

The truth is that the US does not see the Mideast as a crucial energy source. Under President Trump the US is now the largest producer of energy in the world and net exporter of oil. The Hormuz Strait and the persian gulf are just less important to us now than they used to be.

If I were French, German or Chinese however, I'd be pretty anxious.

Good analysis!

Would need more than Iron Dome.
Perhaps Skylock to complement.

Russ,

I agree with Mike. Excellent analysis!! There's little I can add except I think Iean wants a war right now. President Trump isn't going to give it to them, certainly not for Saudi Arabia.

Russ, I agree too. Good analysis.

And with Trump seemingly against war, as opposed to say a Bush Jr who would likely have already ordered an outright attack and invasion of Iran, in the best interests of world peace.

The post should have read "I think Iran wants a war right now." Auto correct sometimes messes up. I believe all other aspects of the post to essentially be accurate.
