World News Briefs -- September 4, 2019 (Evening Edition)

Daily Mail: Boris Johnson's bid for snap election is CRUSHED: Corbyn chickens out of letting public go to the polls as MPs inflict humiliating defeat on PM hours after passing law to stop No Deal

* Boris Johnson has insisted the 'country must decide' after suffering another crippling defeat in the Commons
* Remainers have pushed legislation through the House that would rule out No Deal at the Halloween deadline
* It would force the PM to ask for a Brexit delay until January if there is no agreement in place by October 19
* Mr Johnson said the law, which must still go through the Lords, effectively 'ends negotiations' with EU
* Jeremy Corbyn said he will block October 15 election in crucial vote tonight as No Deal legislation not finished
* Massive civil war has erupted within Labour over whether the poll should happen before Brexit is delayed
* Rebel Ken Clarke launched tirade at 'game playing' PM in Commons after being stripped of Tory whip

Jeremy Corbyn denied voters the chance to decide on Brexit tonight after ordering his MPs to block Boris Johnson's call for a snap election.

A clearly frustrated PM ridiculed the stance taken by Corbyn - who did not even bother to be present for the declaration of the result - taunting that he was the first Opposition leader 'in history' to turn down the opportunity of a poll.

But crucially, Mr Johnson did not give any indication of how he might now try to extricate himself from the impasse.
