The Guardian: Ousted John Bolton attacks Trump's approach to 'dangerous' North Korea

Former national security adviser renounces US policy in first public comments since exit but does not discuss Trump-Ukraine

John Bolton has comprehensively repudiated the Trump administration’s North Korea policy, warning that the Pyongyang regime is becoming more dangerous with every passing day.

Bolton’s comments on Monday were his first public remarks since leaving his post as national security adviser three weeks ago – but he did not address questions about why he spent 17 months in an administration whose policy he vehemently disagreed with.

Perception can often be reality for some people. In Washington, Bill Clinton though eh could sway the North Koreans with 2 light water reactors.

Moon Jae-in certainly believes it can be done. Perhaps his assessment of 2022 is overly optimistic but it does put a date to it where he can and will be judged by whether or not it comes to pass. When the editor lacks full infornation on something, he often admits to going with his "gut." My "gut" tells me we are actually much closer to an agreement than is generally known.

Of course Moon may not have been factoring in the impeachment drive against Trump. Removing the most important variable at a key time could be catastrophic. Then again the US is under a very large microscope so I think he did know. The level of progress may have been so great that a new POTUS will have no choice but to continue on tge same course.

The people who worked tirelessly on the initial summit and the other meetings certainly think it's possible. Kim and the North Korean and Chinese leadership certainly think it possible. After all they afforded Trump and by extension America the prestige of a meeting in such a public forum thereby granting a degree of legitimacy to America and South Korea's position that hadn't been granted before. The people of the host sites for this meeting certainly believed progress to be possible.

At this time in 2017, war looked inevitable and victory far from certain and American casualties guaranteed. From this low point, tremendous progress has been made. We CANNOT go back to where we were then.

Candidate Trump rightly called out South Korea by name during the campaign as a user and abuser of America. IMHO this sent a message loud and clear to South Korea and it's leadership class. America's days of being South Korea's b!tch boy won't last for ever. As such, they needed to GET MOVING on making oeace with North Korea. IMHO what passes for "analysis" in the American overlooks this very obvious situation.

As for Mr. Bolton, he suggested the "Libya model" for North Korea. He hasn't denied this to the best of my knowledge. This is colossal bad judgement. This alone would tend to discredit any analysis he might come up with. In contrast Moon Jae-in has a lifetime of experience dealing with North Koreans. As such, I'll go with his judgement over that of Bolton.

The alternative: South Korea nuclear arms. Oh well, this allows us to get out. Any end to the Korean War will need a reasonable timetable for the US to FINALLY get out!!
