CNBC: Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam invokes emergency powers, announces face mask ban

* The ban was made under the Emergency Regulations Ordinance, a colonial-era law that gives the city’s leader the power to create regulations “in the public interest” in an “emergency or public danger.”
* Tensions hit new highs after police shot a protester on Tuesday, amid mass demonstrations on China’s National Day.
Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam on Friday invoked emergency powers and banned face masks, saying the order goes into effect Saturday.
Consequences for breaking the ban include up to one year in jail and a fine of 25,000 Hong Kong dollars ($3,187). Violators must be prosecuted within a year of the date on which the prohibition was broken, according to a copy of the ban.
In a press conference, Lam said the face mask ban was necessary because “almost all protesters who carry out vandalism and violence covered their face.”
“The purpose was to hide their identity and evade the law and they have become more and more daring,” Lam said.

California is home to many people of Chinese descent who have bought property in some areas. Many didn't seem to speak English years ago before I moved. The smart and lucky ones?
