ABC News Online: Donald Trump's call for a Syria ceasefire rejected by Turkey as Russia-backed forces move in

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has slapped down a call from US President Donald Trump for a ceasefire in north-eastern Syria, as Ankara faces growing condemnation over its military offensive there.

Turkey pressed ahead with its operation on Tuesday (local time) despite the US imposing sanctions on three Turkish ministers and two government departments, and hiking up steel tariffs.

Russia is the latest country to weigh in on Turkey's incursion into Syria, making its strongest criticisms since Mr Erdogan launched the operation last week.
