Sputnik: Former Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev Reveals Who Was Responsible for Country's Collapse

Gorbachev became General Secretary of the Soviet Union in 1985, and served as the first and only president of the USSR between 1990 and 1991, after which the country ceased to exist.

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has revealed to German news magazine Der Spiegel who he believed was responsible for the collapse of the USSR, explaining that the members of the government who attempted to organise a coup against him and then-Russian republic leader Boris Yeltsin were the chief culprits.

“Those who organized the coup in August 1991, and who took advantage of the weakened position of the president of the USSR, are responsible for the end of perestroika and the collapse of the Soviet Union,” Gorbachev explained, speaking to the German magazine on the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

WNU Editor: There are may reasons why the Soviet Union fell apart, an attempted coup was just a minor blimp to its eventual demise. What eventually did end the Soviet Union was the system itself. Communism/socialism/progressives/etc. .... government intervention and regulation of people's affairs and economic well-being never deliver the promises that they make. In the case of the Soviet Union, once the people were no longer afraid of the security apparatus that kept the system together, it quickly crumbled. Unfortunately, in the case of Eastern Europe and the former states that made up the Soviet Union, it is going to take a take a few generations to recover from the legacy of that rule.

The thing is, they could've kept it going if they wanted to. People lost fear of the security apparatus, yes - it wouldn't have been hard to put that fear back in them if needed. But most of those in charge had no desire to, and many had the desire to carve up the turkey instead.

Anon 10:37 aka Fred or whoever

I do not care how upset you are that I called your world for what it actually is. Deal with it.

WNU logically grouped "Communism/socialism/progressives/etc" together.

Liberals in the US call themselves progressives (when they are not occasionally running away from the label).

Liberals want to put people in camps, if they did not believe in liberal religious tenets such as AGW. I do not believe in 6 degree C temp rise by 2100. I believe it is more like 1 or 1.5. That is but one example.

Here is proof. Go cry it is anecdotal as a delaying tactic. I know a lib like you is good for it.

Just to be clear; Communism/socialism/progressives/liberalism are all related but technically different. Hope this helps.

Also liberals change labels like decent people change underwear

A federal judge on Monday dismissed President Donald Trump's lawsuit to prevent the House Ways and Means Committee from utilizing a recently passed New York law providing the panel an avenue to pursue his state tax returns.

Judge Carl Nichols of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that his court was not the proper jurisdiction to sue the New York officials named in the lawsuit, leaving open the option that Trump do so in the Empire State.

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham has yet to hold a single briefing since ascending to the position of President Trump's chief spokesperson, but she has made plenty of time for softball interviews with Fox News.
Since taking the job in July, Grisham has appeared on Fox News or the Fox Business Network at least 13 times, during which she has assailed the press and disparaged critics of the President.
