MOSCOW/BERLIN (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed on Monday that Ukraine should give its separatist-led Donbass region a special status set out in Ukrainian law, the Kremlin said.

It gave no further details of the leaders’ discussions on the future of Donbass during a phone call, but agreement on its status would be a step toward convening a four-nation summit on ending five years of conflict in the eastern region.

WNU Editor: This "special status" was the original demand from Ukraine's Russian minority in the eastern part of the country before the war exploded in 2014. So many lives destroyed to get to the point where it could have all been avoided by negotiation and compromise. I predict this special status will be formally agreed upon when this summit takes place .... Kremlin eyes four-way Ukraine summit this year (Reuters). You ever notice how it is the Ukraine that has to compromise? Russia takes Crimea and Ukraine has to compromise. Russia attempts to take the Donbas and yet again the Ukraine has to compromise. When do the Russians have to compromise anything? I agree with you on so many things wnu, but this issue baffles me. The Ukraine is the victim here, not the Russians and not those supposed "Russian" speakers either.
