Bolivia's socialist leader Evo Morales has gone into hiding after resigning as President, as jubilant crowds took to the streets to celebrate his downfall.

Morales announced his departure yesterday after nearly 14 years in power, bowing to pressure from the military after weeks of protests over a disputed election.

The 60-year-old has fled to the region of Chapare, and Mexico has already offered him asylum amid claims he is facing arrest.

Posting on Twitter today, he denounced his opponents as 'racists and coup plotters' and called on his successors to 'pacify' the country
