SCMP: Hong Kong protests: city crippled for third straight day as radicals torch tunnel tollbooths, take over roads in 10 districts and vandalise train stations

* City woke up to more gridlock with Cross-Harbour Tunnel barricaded as early as 6am, while roads are blocked and trains slowed
* Actions continued throughout day and, at night, a flash mob appeared at Cross-Harbour Tunnel tollbooths to set them on fire

Beijing’s liaison office in Hong Kong says the city is “sliding into the abyss of terrorism” and a harsher crackdown is needed to end the unrest and restore order.

The warning comes as the financial hub reels from some of the worst violence since massive anti-government protests started five months ago, with the number of protesters arrested since Monday surpassing the total for the whole previous week.

This week, a protester was shot by police, a man was set on fire, roads were blocked and university campuses turned into battlegrounds.

Who would have ever thought? Especially after Tianamen{sp] and the response then? Not to mention the population "control measures" under the benevolent Mao.
