DW: Belarus: How death squads targeted opposition politicians
Twenty years ago, some leading Belarusian opposition politicians disappeared without a trace. In an exclusive interview with DW, a key witness tells how he assisted a special unit in committing abduction and murder.
In early September of this year, a man named Yuri Garavski contacted DW's Russian Service. The 41-year-old is living as an asylum-seeker in a German-speaking region in the Alps. Yuri asked us not to reveal which country he is in. He fears the long arm of the Belarusian security apparatus, his old comrades — because he is a key witness with a highly explosive story to tell.

WNU Editor: Lukashenko has ruled Belarus since 1994 and is Europe's last dictator. He has been in power for this long because he tolerates no opposition. Reports like the above by DW that death squads were used to kill his opponents does not surprise me.

He's a bitter pill to swallow for the Kremlin. They'd rather not be in the position of supporting a man like him but given how many countries NATO has flipped on their borders since Clinton's presidency they don't see any alternative. Unfortunately he will stay in power until he dies or some kind of unlikely detente between the west and Russia can be arrived at.
