In this movie the battalion is almost decimated by allied artillery before they're finally able to get a message out via carrier pigeon. That pigeon's story is incredible.
Her name was Cher Ami and she was shot 4 times by the Germans before arriving home with a hole through it's breast, a missing eye, and a leg dangling by it's tendon. The 77th Infantry medics saved it's life, carved it a new wooden leg, and then General Pershing himself took her back to the United States where she lived 4 more years as an award winning racing pigeon.
