The Iran Regime Is Not Going To Change

Suzanne Maloney, The Atlantic: Iran’s Leaders Have a Problem They Can’t Fix

The downing of a plane showed citizens what’s wrong with the Iranian government, but the regime has no plans to change.

When Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led prayers at Tehran’s Grand Mosque for the first time in eight years on Friday, Iran’s supreme leader described the downing of Ukrainian Airlines Fight 752 by his military as a “bitter accident”—one that enemies abroad were exploiting as an excuse to discredit the Islamic Republic. But the real threat to the regime, which has spent decades trying to cement its rule, is the discontent of the Iranian public. Both the plane crash on January 8 and the cover-up that followed struck at the heart of the grievances that shape Iranians’ anger toward and alienation from their government. And if the demise of Flight 752 revealed the government’s malign disregard for its own citizens, its relentless suppression of the subsequent protests has only underscored its imperviousness to any meaningful accountability.

That's the point. All neocon chickenhawks gain succor from the suffering and immiseration of others.

Their dream is to swim in a pool filled with the blood of dead Persian women and children.

- DUMBASS TROLL LIAR

"An Iranian-American who fled during the 1979 revolution is commanding the US aircraft carrier posted to the region"

- TRUTH

You think there is a inner circle that does not include Iranian-Americans, Black-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Asian-Americans, Women, LGBT, where they get together and discuss your fetishes like "dream is to swim in a pool filled with the blood..."

I would be interested in hearing who you think this inner circle is, since I am married to a minority. Maybe I did not get the secret handshake and am unaware.

Maybe Colin Powell, Obama, Holder and all those others did not get the secret handshake?

Anyway keep trolling. You're bad at it. You're like the North Vietnamese sniper that the Marines at Khe Sanh did not eliminate, because he was so bad at it and never hit anyone. If they killed him he would be replaced by a competent sniper.

President Trump has made it clear the US isn't seeking regime change. I've noticed after the taking out of Salami the criticism of this action, while not non existent, has been more muted than normal. Even Russia and China Iran's chief supporters have done little more than offer token criticism of this action. They could be doing much more. Thus far they haven't.

Trump diplomacy at work? After all get Russia to withdraw it's support the problem becomes much easier to solve.

Are the Europeans, Russians, Chinese, and others starting to lose patience with the genocidal Iranian government? Given the tepid response to our most recent actions I consider that to be a real possibility.

I think it's likely a combination of Trump diplomacy and a loss of patience with the Iranian leadership. Even International bodies seem reluctant to back up Iran in its blood lust against America as they would have in the past. It seems the taking out of Salami has indicated Iran may not be as fearsome and tough as originally believed.

The US doesn't need to involve itself in this. Others are likely in a better position and with Trump as POTUS at least Iran "death to America" appears to be well contained. Furthermore the reality may be setting in among Iran's allies that at least as long as Trump is president Iran isn't getting nuclear weapons nor can they make any progress towards this.

Iran's allies appear to have lost patience with them. The next step may be for them to replace that government with something more pragmatic. We can hope as we can hope for progress in other areas as well. At a minimum, recent events have shown Iran may not be as fearsome as originally believed. This is unlikely to help them.

They can and will make progress towards nukes when and how they desire, particularly under trump.
