DW: Bundestag approves funds for German-French fighter jet
Germany has voted to pay €77 million for the first prototypes of a "new generation fighter" for European armed forces. The country's defense minister has called it a concrete step towards European security.
Bundestag lawmakers approved on Wednesday the initial funds for a transnational project with France to create a new fighter jet and develop a program aimed at bringing together European military forces.
Representatives in German parliament's lower chamber signed-off on loans worth €77 million ($83 million) to build the first sets of the "new generation fighter." France is expected to contribute the same amount.
The research initiative forms an important part of Germany's joint Future Combat Air System (FCAS) with Spain and is part of a wider plan to draw back on the European Union's long dependency on US aircraft, drones and satellites.

I would hope it would be superior since by the time it flies, 20 years will have elapsed. By the time it's fielded in large numbers 30 years will have passed.
It better be better than the F-35. After all any German-French mega billion project will take decades to get out in the field. So by 2040, if it flies that soon, it should be much better than the F-35. By 2040 the F-35 will be vastly upgraded compared to today's model, so it will be a moving target worthy of the Germans. Of course by 2040 the USAF will be deep into development of a 6th gen fighter.

You mean they are going to name the fighter after Merkel?
Prediction/. They will spend $50 million on study and specs. Maybe even come up with a static mock up. Then after five years quit the project and buy the F-35.
Germany and Franco have too many economic burdens (Welfare state) and too little incentive to come up with an indigenous 5th gen fighter.
