Chinese President Xi Declares Victory Over The Coronavirus Outbreak In Visit To Wuhan

SCMP: Chinese President Xi Jinping salutes Wuhan under shadow of coronavirus pandemic threat

* Xi lauds frontline workers and residents at the outbreak’s epicentre to boost morale and support for the Communist Party
* Trip also an attempt to send a message to the world about ‘the strength of China’s political system’

Hailing “victory to Wuhan” and saluting its people as heroes, Chinese President Xi Jinping used his first trip to the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak on Tuesday to signal that China had turned the tide in its battle against the deadly disease.

The much-anticipated visit – about three months after first cases were reported in the provincial capital of Hubei province – was carefully orchestrated to boost domestic morale and seize back the narrative.

Having come under heavy criticism from overseas initially, Beijing is now portraying its containment efforts as a heroic fight showcasing the Chinese people’s spirit as well as the strength of the country’s unique political system.

WNU Editor: This is very unusual. Chinese leaders do not go out and do a PR event to "send a message" to the world.

National review! says this

The failures of leadership at the top, however, show no sign of being corrected. In a serious public-health crisis, the public has the right to expect the government’s chief executive to lead in a number of crucial ways: by prioritizing the problem properly, by deferring to subject-matter experts when appropriate while making key decisions in informed and sensible ways, by providing honest and careful information to the country, by calming fears and setting expectations, and by addressing mistakes and setbacks.

This was a "message" by Xi, but for internal domestic reasons. It could be said it's a good indicator of Xi's self-awareness as to his hold on power.

This was the day Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) has been warning about — and essentially predicted. Back in 2017, when the Trump administration first proposed steep cuts to programs that handle disease outbreaks, Cole said, “I promise you the president is much more likely in his term to have a deal with a pandemic than an act of terrorism. I hope he doesn’t have to deal with either one, but you have to be ready to deal with both.”

Now that the potential pandemic has come, Cole is re-upping his long-standing criticisms of the Trump administration’s posture toward preparedness. And on Tuesday, he offered a little bit of an “I told you so,” even suggesting that the situation might not be as bad if the administration had listened to him.
