Asia Times: Patents: China knocks US out of top spot
The Asian powerhouse has become the word leader in international filings
China last year became the world leader in international patent filings, unseating the United States which had held the top spot for more than four decades, the UN said Tuesday.
A record 265,800 international patent applications were filed last year, a hike of 5.2% from 2018, the World Intellectual Property Organisation said in its annual report.
WIPO’s complex system of registering international patents involves multiple categories.
In the main category – the Patent Cooperation Treaty, or PCT – China topped the ranking for the first time, with 58,990 applications.

Disappointing from my perspective. And infuriating.
Chinese corporations are state subsidized and studiously dedicated to the theft of every bit of western intellectual and industrial property they can squirrel away with. That China managed to file 1,150 more patents than the US last year will be held up as a great victory for China (and her Western enablers).
What exactly were these patents? From the articles we know that Huawei alone filed 4,411 patents. The corporate leader for the third year.
China has proven itself a mass-producer of counterfeit technology thieved from Western industrial pioneers. Goods that sell cheap with quality to match. With the added bonus of infection by Chinese spy applications within.
By definition, a parasite.
It is time for the west to extricate ourselves from China. Remove the Chinese industrial and intellectual proboscis from our neck. Right now. No other country has done more damage to the US and the world at large - pollution, disease, deceit. Certainly not the USSR. We can debate if Nazi Germany was more or less evil.

There might be thieving.
But consider how and/or why we generate patents. Often they are generated by research at companies and universities.
Does China have more universities or university researchers than we do?
We have many people going to college in the USA, but how many English Lit. majors file patents? Some may, but it isn't the usual thing.
Companies file patents because of basic research or because of PROBLEMS. You can;t have manufacturing problems if you do not manufacture. NECESSITY is the MOTHER of INVENTION. You do not need anything, if someone else literally 1/2 way across the world is doing for you.
You learn by doing instead of just by research. You have a problem on the line, you learn about new things about materials, about chemistry and physics.
