Reuters: Japan to declare coronavirus emergency, launch $990 billion stimulus: PM
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan is to impose a state of emergency in Tokyo and six other prefectures as early as Tuesday to try to stop the coronavirus, the prime minister said, with the government preparing a $990 billion stimulus package to soften the economic blow.
More than 3,500 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Japan and 85 have died - not a huge outbreak compared with some hot spots. But the numbers keep rising with particular alarm over the spread in Tokyo, which has more than 1,000 cases, including 83 new ones on Monday.
“Given the state of crisis on the medical front, the government was advised to prepare to declare the state of emergency,” Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters.

Hmm. That's a bold move.. Japan is a very clean place - up there with Germany - and they are great at keeping it clean. BUT.. social distancing.. that works better in Germany. Germany has a far lower density in its cities.. Berlin, its biggest city even in its center is quite open spaced, lots of fresh air, and even the subway isn't too cramped. Tokyo.. think of how they shove you (with gloves, admittedly) into the trains. How you are compressed - thousands and thousands of pictures/documentaries on this on the web. I haven't been to Tokyo, but its no secret that it is one of the densest cities (capita/km2) in the World. Now, if they work from home etc, much of it can be reduced - and likely this is the case, or they use a rotary principle like in Beijing (where you get days allotted in the week during which you can drive your car, e.g. Monday, Wednesday, Friday into the city).. there are many ways to reduce social proximity/increase social distancing, and I think that's what we all have to do..
"Japan is a very clean place - "
So is or was Canada.
Best Western hotel was decent in the 1970s IMO. In the 1990s I would want to find a Hampton Inn instead. Bummer was staying in the Detroit/Toledo exburbs. Surprise was staying in a Best Western in Ontario and thinking this is a Best Western? It was clean. Only place that was not clean that I saw in Canada was Mississaugua. I've been to 2 provinces.
What have people like Trudeau have done in the last 25 years?
