WNU Editor: This was happening all the time during the Cold War. And while the rate of "intercepts" is not as high as it was 30-40-50 years ago, you have to wonder if anything has really changed since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Has anything really changed? I would say that it has. In the post WW2 era when we entered into Cold War 1, the Soviet/Russian forces had fought along side our people against Nazi Germany. As such, while there were sharp disagreements and much tension, they respected us. This respect helped to defuse tensions at key points.
In contrast, today they not only appear to not respect us but they aeen to hold us in utter contempt. As they don't respect us, it's unlikely that there will be the backdoor channels that existed during Cold War 1 that could be used to reduce tensions. As such, the current situation with Cold War 2 is far more dangerous and is much more likely to escalate into hot war than Cold War 1 ever was. Additionally the United States hasn't focused on its nuclear deterrent to the extent our, leadership should have and we lack the network of reliable allies who could/would assist us in a conflict with Russia today that we had in Cold War 1. So, yes things have changed significantly and far for worse for us. Essentially our pistuin is vastly more precarious in Cold War 2 than it was in Cold War 1.
