U.S. Intelligence Officials Say Chinese Agents Helped Spread Fake Messages That Sowed Virus Panic in U.S.

New York Times: Chinese Agents Helped Spread Messages That Sowed Virus Panic in U.S., Officials Say

American officials were alarmed by fake text messages and social media posts that said President Trump was locking down the country. Experts see a convergence with Russian tactics.

WASHINGTON — The alarming messages came fast and furious in mid-March, popping up on the cellphone screens and social media feeds of millions of Americans grappling with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

Spread the word, the messages said: The Trump administration was about to lock down the entire country.

“They will announce this as soon as they have troops in place to help prevent looters and rioters,” warned one of the messages, which cited a source in the Department of Homeland Security. “He said he got the call last night and was told to pack and be prepared for the call today with his dispatch orders.”

The messages became so widespread over 48 hours that the White House’s National Security Council issued an announcement via Twitter that they were “FAKE.”

Since that wave of panic, United States intelligence agencies have assessed that Chinese operatives helped push the messages across platforms, according to six American officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to publicly discuss intelligence matters. The amplification techniques are alarming to officials because the disinformation showed up as texts on many Americans’ cellphones, a tactic that several of the officials said they had not seen before.

WNU Editor: My brother fell for this. Calling me at 1:30 AM that President Trump was going to declare martial law. And even though martial law has not been declared, he still believes that President Trump will declare it in the future. Unlike the Russians, the Chinese are very good at spreading disinformation and propaganda. This is how China wages war, and the U.S. better wake up.

Next thing to spill out is DNC collusion with the Chinese on this whole thing.

Sad thing is, China does not have to do much work, Democrats have already tilled the sold for them.

The Chinese just piggyback onto what the conspiracies put out their by the mainstream left and by the far, far right.

Squirrel (8:52),

You are boring. I know a non-native speaker than can teach English much better than you and they are a much more interesting conversationalist. What is the point of a mind numbed Democrat robot such as yourself trying to impress us with your socialist ethos? You don;t know much.

‘Sadness’ and Disbelief From a World Missing American Leadership

The coronavirus pandemic is shaking bedrock assumptions about U.S. exceptionalism. This is perhaps the first global crisis in more than a century where no one is even looking for Washington to lead.

We all remember "Russia, if you're listening." Right? We all remember when Trump stood alongside Putin at Helsinki, and took Putin's side. Right? // The Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee just unanimously confirmed Russia WAS listening. And Trump STILL thinks that's great.

I have an uncle from East Germany. Due to the heavy communist indoctrination courses, his degree from an East German university was not recognized, which when I 1st heard about it made sense to me. It doesn't make as much sense to me now, because if you have 30 semester hours of humanities electives (out of 120 hours) or 30 semester Marxism, what is the the dif?

So effectively he was not white collar, when he crossed the Iron Curtain and headed west. But it ended well, because he came to America; bitched about it; his sponsor told him to go back, if he didn't like it; he did; he came back and became a millionaire in SOCAL.

So Merkel has a degree. And?

Trump attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, which from everything I know is a really good school.

I am not sure about Merkel's school or why she ditched a scientific career? Maybe, because it is publish or perish and she had published very little?

https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=24432527000

Her h-index is very low.

When asked if she was a snitch for the STASI Merkel said:

"I can only rely on my memory, if something turns out to be different, I can live with that."

Not much of a denial.

She was a snitch for the STASI. I can see why she would be someone NSFW would be interested in.

Who is smarter, Donald J. Trump or Angela Merkel?

In this question, we could replace Angela Merkel with virtually anyone or anything else, George W. Bush, Boris Johnson, Private S. Baldrick, Mr. Bean, a tub of lard, and the answer still isn't going to be Trump.

Trump is a shrewd businessman, they say, but is he? He's certainly not a self-made man, his original large bank balance was given to him by Daddy Trump. He has held onto and grown his fortune by lying, cheating, threatening, scamming and simply refusing to pay invoices. He can't be honest about his finances because either there's a tax bombshell lurking in there or he's not as rich as he claims to be and couldn't handle everyone knowing that.

I'm smart, says he, I'm the smartest, there's no-one smarter than me, but is he? It seems that one of America's top universities with a long history of academic excellence has managed to lose all records of the degree that he claims to have. Studies of Trump undertaken by behavioural psychologists pinpoint dozens of indicators that he probably, in fact, has severe reading difficulties and is using common coping mechanisms to hide this.

Trump doesn't seem to have realised that the White House isn't just another reality show, he shows no political savvy whatsoever, and he is to international diplomacy what Paris Hilton is to particle physics. Perhaps one ought to be asking, if Trump hadn't been born to wealth and privilege, which street corner would he be sleeping on today?

"Russia, if you're listening."

The say old people cannot recognize sarcasm or humor. You are very, very old. And it shows.

We might still get those deleted emails. There is a current lawsuit to get them.

So why would you not have wanted the Trump campaign or the world to know what was in Hillary's emails?

Maybe because she and Obama were running guns into Syria?

A better question is why you would vote for someone, who causally and regularly tosses around the word "KIKE" like Hillary?

Because you are not Jewish, but are religiously liberal?

When Congress massively changed the tax law in 1986 and destroyed REITs and real estate in general, it takes a real cool operator to get the banks to renegotiate. And he did. Not many people could have done that.

On another note I think that Merkel in 12 years published more than a squirrel did in a lifetime. What does that tell you?

"So what does it say about Joe Biden's vaunted leadership in a crisis that a creature as vile as Osama bin Laden thought it would serve his interests best to have him at the helm of the U.S. as a sure way of creating chaos instead of Barack Obama?"

So Bin Laden was of the opinion that Slow Joe was a dope.

Who knew?

Not a dumb question ,because many Diom voters do not know to this day.

poor pathetic stalker...girl/boy out of school and stuck at mommy and daddy home and so must dump his shit...now his hero whom he trusts is Bin Laden!
Fact: BIN LADEN KNEW HOW GREAT OBAMA WAS. Thus, he thought Biden, were he to become president, would not be able to handle the job. But Miss Slut, aka Anon, embraces OBL thinking but does that mean he also knows how great Obama is? and VPs never show how they can be as president till they hold the office, as did Truman

Mass casualties from the coronavirus could upend the political landscape in battleground states and shift contests away from President Donald Trump, according to a new analysis.

Academic researchers writing in a little-noticed public administration journal — Administrative Theory & Praxis — conclude that when considering nothing other than the tens of thousands of deaths projected from the virus, demographic shifts alone could be enough to swing crucial states to Joe Biden in the fall.

“The pandemic is going to take a greater toll on the conservative electorate leading into this election — and that’s simply just a calculation of age,” Andrew Johnson, the lead author and a professor of management at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, said in an interview. “The virus is killing more older voters, and in many states that’s the key to a GOP victory.”

The president lied again this week.

Astonishingly, that didn’t even register as a big deal by this point. He lies incessantly. But it is still a big deal. He lied about shutting down all immigration on Monday night (actually, he’s banning certain types of entry for those who don’t already have a valid travel document). On Wednesday, he lied about telling the Navy to shoot down Iranian gunboats (the Navy says it’s received no such directive). This follows a string of lies from last week claiming absolute authority over state governors and also the power to shut down Congress. The pattern is so familiar it’s tiresome: He lies, some of us point out the lies, then everyone starts arguing over whether the media should cover his lying or if the lies are a distraction, and suddenly we’re all suckers.

But it matters that the president keeps lying. When Americans head to the polls in November to decide whether President Donald Trump deserves a second term, they will be voting for or against radically different President Trumps. In part because he lies so fluently and easily, some people will vote based on what Trump says he’s done, and others will vote based on what he’s actually done—and the gap between the two is perilously wide.

Democracy depends on accountability, and accountability depends on knowing whom we are holding to account and for what. And we can do so only by knowing what our elected officials have actually done. But Donald Trump has—it appears, and quite deliberately—inverted all that. He says he’s doing one thing, then he does another. He says there is a new policy, and then it doesn’t materialize. He tweets out his feelings, then his underlings get to work creating a new policy or rule that may or may not have any legal force. It may or may not ever go into effect. But some voters will go to the polls believing, reasonably, that he did something because he said he did.

This week’s lie—well, one of this week’s many lies (alongside others, he is claiming not to have held campaign rallies he, in fact, held)—is the type of lie that particularly distorts the public’s understanding of Trump. On Monday evening, Trump tweeted that he would “be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!” Many reacted with horror. One of us quickly pointed out that, just as candidate Trump had pledged a Muslim ban after a terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California, perpetrated by a U.S. citizen and his wife, Trump was now provocatively but uselessly promising an immigration ban that would do nothing to stop a pandemic already running rampant inside our country.

Stalking? I don't go to your pathetic site or anything else. I just don't like liberal shit that you hash out here go unchallenged. The 1st really ridiculous shit you hashed was to avow that one could say rightwing, but not leftwing.
Especially with you being so dull and all. I would put you on mute like you can on DisQus, but blogspot has no such option.

Yeah, Obama was so smart. He broke Libya. There still is war there. George Bush got an agreement, protected American interest and left Libya alone. Libya was too far away for Russian to help it (And Russia too weak at the time). GWB could have taken it and he did not.

Obama also broke Iraq. Iraq had a functioning parliamentary government. GWB spent time every day making it so via a phone call and other things.

Obama declared Yemen and a success story.

However bad Obama is and he is dumb, Biden is worse. He cannot tell you how many grand daughters he has, when he has a picture of them in his hands. No, no it is not dementia. Biden just never learned to count that high. I think he needs an accountant for that.

And you being the religiously observant liberal that you are will vote for Biden.
