Could The Wars In Syria And Libya Cause A New US-Russia Cold War?

Seth J. Frantzman, The Hill: Could a new US-Russia cold war erupt over Syria and Libya?

The U.S. and Russia appear to be heading for some sort of confrontation in Syria and Libya, as tensions grow in both countries and Turkey pressures the U.S. to play a larger role. On June 8, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan phoned President Trump to discuss Libya, among other issues. The Pentagon has been spotlighting Russia’s growing involvement in Libya, where a 10-year civil war once claimed the life of a U.S. ambassador, and Washington is concerned.

At the heart of this new Middle Eastern cold war may be the desire to bog down the Russians in numerous conflicts. Like most countries, Moscow still is dealing with COVID-19 at home, and its ally in the Syrian regime has failed to right a rapidly declining economy. James Jeffrey, the U.S. Special Representative for Syria, has said he wants to make Syria a “quagmire” for the Russians. That conjures up images of Afghanistan in the 1980s, made famous in the film “Charlie Wilson’s War.”

WNU Editor: I just do not see a New Cold War happening right now. I know in Russia no one is thinking about it, and I do not see any U.S. public support for starting a new Cold War, especially over failed states like Syria and/or Libya.

Very respectfully we are already in a new Cold War. When the first one ended I never thought we'd need to number them!! Now that we are in a new let's call it Cold War 2.

Since we are in a new Cold War, the question becomes do we pursue policies that reduce tensions or do we do things that exacerbate tensions. If we pursue enough policies that reduce tensions the cumulative effect is we may even end Cold War 2!!

Their is nothing of importance to the US in either Syria or Libya that is worth a conflict with Russia.

Just who is James Jeffries? I looked him up. Three things come to mind. 1.)He is old, born in 1946. 2.) There's no mention of family. Perhaps this is a bitter old man whose itching for a fight with someone. Keep in mind he won't bear the brunt of a Russian reprisal for his stupid policy. This will be bourne by the American people. His reckless and stupid goal of turning Syria into a "quagmire" is placing my loved ones in grave danger. 3.) He has been in government a VERY, VERY long time. While more evidence would be needed to conclude he is a "swamp creature," this combined with the policy suggests he probably is.

The goal of making Syria a "quagmire" for Russia is at total odds with POTUS's stated goal of ending the "endless wars." POTUS's stated goal is the correct policy to pursue. Mr. Jeffries needs to be sent into retirement forthwith!!
