Daily Star/AFP: Trump says US economy 'largely' over pandemic, as EU eyes border openings

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said Friday the US economy had largely made it through the coronavirus pandemic, as a top expert in France said the worst was over there and the EU looked to open its borders again.

The United States is by far the worst hit by the deadly disease, which has killed over 390,000 people and infected some 6.6 million globally since it first erupted in China last year.

As the US leader trumpeted his country's economic recovery, there was fresh news on the scientific front as a new trial out of the UK suggested that the controversial drug hydroxychloroquine -- which Trump has taken -- offered no benefit in treating COVID-19.

WNU Editor: I think it is too early to make such a claim. A lot of businesses are not going to open up. Debt levels are exceedingly high. And the pandemic is not over yet. Cases are still rising in many places around the world, and its impact on the global economy is still being felt. But negativity aside. Today's U.S. and Canadian jobs report are a good sign that a recovery is starting.

I can say from first hand experience that Covid 19 is no worse than a cold. Shutting down the nation's economy because of it was a HUGE mistake! Best reopen as soon as possible.

I can say from first hand experience that Covid 19 is worse than a cold. Shutting down the nation's economy because of it was not a mistake! Best reopen as cautiously as possible.
