A search for eight service members has been called off and all are presumed dead, after their amphibious assault vehicle sank in deep water off the coast of Southern California.
The 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit tweeted early Sunday that the rescue operation was now a recovery mission, after a 40-hour search that covered 1,000 nautical miles.
The seven marines and one sailor have been missing since their amphibious assault vehicle sank in 600-feet deep water near San Clemente Island in Los Angeles County about 5:45pm Thursday.

I dont understand why the search was called off. You mean they will abandon the amphibious assault vehicle along with the bodies of the crew still missing? How will they determine the cause of the accident without the hardware to examine? What about the families of the missing soldiers? The dead soldiers deserve a proper burial. Don't call off the search. Use an underwater salvage ship to bring them all up.
Lots of questions.
Were they buttoned up? Freak wave?
Seal failure?
Corrosion?
I believe the search mission will be turned into a recovery mission. There may be some difficulty locating vehicle because it may have drifted depending on currents and semi buoyancy as it sank. Either way they will find it, it will just take time.

If you zoom in to San Clemente Island which is off the coast of San Diego you will see a vessel on the east coast of the island called "Acoustic Explorer"...I'm pretty sure that's the search area.
When that happens I always hope they didn't die in an accident but it was all planned and some shadowy CIA like organisation just needed 8 more guys/ girls to work for them. The bodies then recovered are 3D printed injected with some ground up DNA and Papa John's leftovers.
