ABC News Online: Australian correspondents Bill Birtles and Mike Smith pulled out of China after five-day diplomatic standoff over national security case

The ABC and the Australian Financial Review have rushed their correspondents out of China after police demanded interviews with both journalists, resulting in an extraordinary diplomatic standoff.

Bill Birtles, the ABC's correspondent based in Beijing, and Mike Smith, the AFR's correspondent based in Shanghai, boarded a flight to Sydney last night after the pair were questioned separately by China's Ministry of State security.

Birtles had spent four days sheltering in Australia's Embassy in Beijing, while Smith took refuge in Australia's Shanghai consulate as diplomats negotiated with Chinese officials to allow them to safely leave the country.

WNU Editor: China is becoming a very inhospitable place for foreigners. Before the pandemic I was warning my contacts who do business in China that you are doing it at your own risk. Today .... doubly so.

A decade ago I remember an incident at the resident of a former Australian diplomat of 10 to 15 years serivce. He entered private undustry. His job was to investigate the financial health of Chinese companies. It was not economic espionage. It was with whom are crawling into bed. You do not want to formal joint venture only to be cheated. He was married to a former Chinese national.

So a former classmate of hers visited her. Which happened. 15 minutes after the visit started 3 uniformed Chinese policemen were at the door. After several or a dozen minutes of discussion, they left, convinced hopefully that we were not spies.

You usually do not marry someone from another country witht the intent of screwing over that country although it has happened. A Muslim terorist about a 34 years ago married an Irish national and had her visit him in his home country. They traveled seperately by plane. He thoughtfully packed a bomb for her to blow up an airplane.

But generally, decent people do not marry a woman, knock her up, and stay exclusive for the sole purpose of screwing over her homeland. But the above example the man was not decent; He was Palestinian.
