As they say "He who chops his own wood is twice warmed". I would like to chat with "they"!
I love the smell of a wood-burning fire place!
Wnu. How many cords will you burn for home heating I assume? I personally use 3 full each year and the furnace doesn't turn on once! Bought early this year. Thankfully.
I use propane for heat now. However I keep 2 cords of wood and a generator for heat if theirs outages. Nothing like Summer, only 9 months away!

I am cutting wood for my chalet up north.
A cord for me is 4ft high, 4 ft. wide. 8 ft. long.
My chalet is extremely well insulated.
My mom and the girl friend like the place to be toasty warm. Which means the fireplace is always working during winter.
I go through about 5 to 6 cords of wood per season. But we are not always up north.
I cut about 5 cords today. Will do another 5 cords next week. (always good to give a few to the neighbours). :)
All my wood is maple or hardwood.
I have some cherry wood that I use. Cherry wood always makes the chalet smell good.
I should also add that I am near St. Donat 200 km north of Montreal, and in winter it gets very cold. I have had temperatures go down to -40C on a few occasions. But that is the best time to be in a chalet. The freshness of the air. The stillness outside. A fireplace working away. Nothing can beat that feeling.
