The Guardian/AFP: US plans big expansion of navy fleet to challenge growing Chinese sea power

Defence secretary promises future fleet including unmanned ships that will focus on Indo-Pacific region

The US secretary of defence, Mark Esper, has announced an ambitious plan to expand the US Navy with a range of unmanned and autonomous ships, submarines and aircraft to confront the growing maritime challenge from China.

The Pentagon chief said a sweeping review of US naval power dubbed “Future Forward” had laid out a “game-changer” plan that would expand the US sea fleet to more than 355 ships, from the current 293.

The plan, which requires adding tens of billions of dollars to the US Navy’s budget between now and 2045, is aimed at maintaining superiority over Chinese naval forces, seen as the primary threat to the United States.

“The future fleet will be more balanced in its ability to deliver lethal effects from the air, from the sea, and from under the sea,” Esper said in a speech at the Rand Corporation in California on Wednesday.

And that's excluding the many partners the US has, several of them with own nukes program or at least part of the nuke sharing program. China should really reconsider what they do if literally most of the World ALREADY before the Wuhan virus was hoping they get their assess kicked for the trillions in theft and bullying in the area and human rights violations etc etc
China is in for a reckoning if they let the CCP and Xi fool decide their future for them. There will be no Chinese century, I call it now. And I've been always right on my predictions on this blog. Always. Not like the little parrot, who probably studies Chinese now because CNN told him it's the language of the future lol it's not. Less people study Chinese. China has zero friends left. Even Putin told them recently, as quoted on RT to basically cool it and take a hint, when they killed the Indian soldiers a few weeks back

I like your optimism on this and hope and pray you're correct. I am familiar with analysis that suggests Russia views China as a long range threat and the current friendly relations are only a matter of convenience for both of them. Essentially it appears to come down to territorial disputes.

If Russia is going to properly confront this, they will want allies and good relations with America will be in the best interests of both Russia and America. Furthermore, while Russian support of Trump is likely a myth, it has been proposed that Russia knowing good relations with a strong America in order to confront China will be extremely helpful might choose to back the candidate whose policies are most likely to lead to a strong America. Obviously this would be Trump. Obviously the Russians are not going to back the American faction who continues to needlessly provoke them.

Furthermore Trump understanding the nature of the long range conflict between Russia and China along with the US being past its proverbial neck on conflict with China would seek to work constructively with Russia. To do this Obviously will require intense diplomacy as well as trust restoring measures on America's part. In my considered opinion, this explains Trump's actions with regards to Russia. The media and Trump's critics simply cannot figure this out. Maybe it's a mental block on their part. Perhaps it's worse. Some of them do seem to have a,pathological need to go out of their way to provoke Russia. In doing this very careful diplomacy that took much time and effort to implement has been badly undermined.

"Some of them do seem to have a,pathological need to go out of their way to provoke Russia."

Sergei,

The Democrats have no animus against the Russian oligarchs. At least not until the future, when the Democrats want to rule the world and they see the Russians as an competing bloc.

The Democrats are merely using the Russians as a convenient boogeyman to crush their internal opponents all for a righteous cause to fool the American populous. Once that is done at some future point they will come into conflict with competing power blocs. But in the interim they are up for some bribes and log rolling.

It is not personal with the Russians. It is just mafia business.

My name isn't Sergei. Either address me by the screen name or my actual name which had been provided numerous times. In slandering me this way, you demonstrate troll like characteristics.

As for your assertions regarding Democrats, you may well be correct. In doing this they would be demonstrating extreme short sighted thinking without thinking through the mid to long range consequences of their actions. Unfortunately this is consistent with how they behave. Frankly such actions make them unfit to lead anything!!

While they may not view these actions as personal, I'm sure Russians and their leaders will view the imposition of sanctions among other things without cause as personal attacks. The stupidity of these actions places Americans in danger and for no good reason.

I think the US Navy should address the white systemic racism patriarchic mysogeny they have over there!!!!

Last heavy fighting during WW2 when they landed in the Normandy, I saw far too many entitled white men dying fighting the Nazis.

Now that's real entitlement! What were they, barely 20 years old on average before they got a limb blown off?

Just like that this filthy white patriarchic system decided only men are good enough for doing young.

You know what?
I think women are right when they fight for 50% board seats in the best companies by virtue of what they have between their legs. I mean who doesn't see justice in that women, by law must now be hired into the best jobs in the world because of their gender?

I think it makes perfect sense. ESPECIALLY as we all agree that equality of outcome surely must mean that they also by law will want 50% of those neat beach- storming missions, and die like men. Surely it must mean that. And surely millions of sincere women stand up now and demand just that, because that's what women are - morally up and up.

So let's agree on the 50% quickly, so they get their chance to die defending Taiwan!

I'm sure our totally not self obsessed, self centred female comrades are looking forward to take their selfie, when returning home without arms, legs or face.

I'm sure they fight for this equality right now.

They truly are the better people.
