Another Leak Reported Aboard Britain's £3.1bn Aircraft Carrier HMS Prince of Wales

A water leak led to three feet of flooding on board HMS Prince of Wales, pictured, though none of the ship's crew were injured

 * HMS Prince of Wales suffered a leak in the £3.1-billion vessel's engine room
 * It is the second time the new aircraft carrer has suffered a leak this year
 * Members of the ship's crew filmed the water cascading into the compartment
 * None of the vessel's crew were injured

Britain's newest aircraft carrier flooded to the depth of 3ft after a water leak in the engine room.

It is the second time HMS Prince of Wales – a £3.1billion state-of-the-art ship – has flooded in the past five months.

Footage filmed by crew members showed water gushing down the stairs and submerging electrical cabinets and pipes.

* Blown seal or gasket
- Material defect
- Installed wrong
* Component failure
* Pipe Burst
* Valve open?
* Poor Training
* Poor design

"And in July last year HMS Queen Elizabeth had to cut short sea trials after a seal burst, causing a large quantity of water to pour from a pipe and to flood through several decks.

The shipyard pressure tested systems?

Sabotage?
Poor quality control?

A seal burst? And that much water? Did the bolts then give way too? The story is not adding up. The seal would be 1/8" thick or less? If the seal bulged and burst, the whole circumference would not be leaking water.

They did not say what system failed (Potable Water, firemain, condensate)

I think this is a people problem of poor workmanship, poor training or sabotage.

Prog disease.

A couple of years ago I watched documentaries on a US aircraft carrier & a British light aircraft carrier. The yanks were all business, launching & recovering aircraft. Very impressive. The British carrier had a serious leak. Crew worked around the clock to fix it. About to launch a Sea King chopper, broke down. They canabalised 2 others for parts so the 1st could fly hour late. 2 ASW combat choppers down. 2nd serious leak. ours to fix. Sea Harrier just makes it to a US Marine Air base in time before crashing. 3rd serious leak, more aircraft problems. If I were a Russian or Chinese Intel analyst I would conclude that the USN is a 1st class fighting service & a very real threat to an enemy. The RN is far too busy trying to prevent their carriers from sinking & their small flights of aircraft in the air to fight a war or even defend them selves. We are easy Meat. The result of 3 decades of disarmament. Our carriers will not be able to operate without USN escorts & USN, USMC aircraft. We might as well become the 51st state. Stay safe n keep ducking 🙉💥

The Brits invented armored decks, angled decks for takeoffs and the take off ramps. In short the Brits taught The Americans a lot.

Something ain't right. I've worked in the engineering room of a ship. On subs they test pipes extensively after repair or replacement. You can do pressure tests, sonic tests, and other tests. IMO they are penny wise and pound foolish. IF you save money on quality control only to have water pour down onto electronic cabinets. The reporter might not be the smartest animal, but they were smart enough to point out the humongous costs of those electrical cabinets being trashed. Maybe we should put them in charge?

The captain of a British carrier said something was always leaking. To me that is a good short term dodge allowing you time and space to get something fixed. Long term if you her that more than a few times, it is a way of retiring as captain and never having been a fighting admiral or one who could have fought in war and held his own.

This isn't the navy that went to the Falklands and won and the steamed over to the Indian Ocean for a victory lap.

They said a seal burst, so obviously that would not be a welded joint.

What is not obvious is if the bolted joint failed completely. If the bolts held you have a small space between the pipe flanges for water to escape. Her Majesties Navy did not tell them or the reporters dinna thunk to ask.

Bolted joints are especially tough when they are a soft joint. That is they have a gasket or seal. But it is done every day folks. You can conduct tests on bolted joint too.

Maybe Her Majesties Navy has been Merkelized?

Brits have great scientists but are very very bad at engineering. If Britain and Germany could let the past be the past and work together, this would be a hell of a team. Plus.. Hitler was Austrian, so let's hate on them instead ;-)

Hitler was a gay vegan, who was PETA before there was PETA.
