WNU Editor: Just a heads-up. My friends, family, and contacts in Ukraine are telling me some disturbing news. Their strain of Covid-19 is hospitalizing large numbers of patients in their twenties and thirties. Apparently this strain is more deadlier than what they experienced at the beginning of this pandemic.

Usually you cannot gain 2 functions. If you have 'gain of function' you have 'loss of function.'
How often do a virus become more contagious and more deadly? They work at odds with one another or so we are told.
For functions to be "highly conserved" there have to be "strong pressures" to select for it.
Select for 2 traits at the same time that are contradictory?

Japan has laws to protect Japanese companies sovereignty and Japanese Workers. It is not perfect, I have seen homeless there.
A foreign corporation You can only own 49% or less of a subsidiary in Japan. The Japanese partners must own 51%.
Brasil copied this Japanese law back in the 1970s or before. In Brasil you can bring in foreign workers managements and they must train their Brasilian replacements and then leave. As an American, European or some other foreign national, you enjoy the culture, you enjoy the big paychecks and then you leave. You get ahead by doing an overseas tour.
Italy cannot copy the Brasilians? I know America should and it hasn't.
I guess owning Italy was not enough for the PRC.
Maybe the PRC went to war because of the trade war?
