Market Watch: Prepare for a ‘marathon’ and two years of wearing masks to battle COVID-19, says prominent Spanish virologist
“
We will get over this in some years, but we don’t have to expect this is going to be a hundred-meter run. It’s going to be a marathon.”— Margarita del Val, virologist and immunologist, Spanish National Research Council
The first full day of new coronavirus restrictions in Madrid looked like business as usual for the city’s famed Gran Vía shopping avenue.
But with the advent of a 50% capacity limit on shops, bars and restaurants, a familiar sight had returned on a chilly Saturday afternoon.
Reminiscent of a few months ago when Spain was just emerging from a strict lockdown, a line of shoppers snaked outside retailer Zara ITX, and an even bigger one stretched down the street in front of Primark ABF.
And even though masks are worn everywhere, all the time now, that 1.5 meter social-distancing measure appears long gone, at a time when Madrid seems to need it most of all.

WNU Editor: The Spanish pandemic of 1918 took over two years to burn itself out, and another year for life to return to normal. I have resigned myself that this will probably be our fate.

Masks may have marginal utility. If it's the price to pay to avoid more stupid lockdowns, then it's an equitable trade. Where I live in Southeast Texas near Houston we are steadily reopening our economy and masks are a fact of life. While the local government does not enforce the mask mandates, large companies generally do and societal norms do as well.

Masks help some. Mainly sneezes I think. But dirty masks and fidgeting with masks might negate that. Health experts warned us against fidgeting with masks and such.
People like the Democrat Governor of Pennsylvania Tom Wolf (D) have called masks theater. Still going against social norms is just not worth the freight right now.
I don't think the COVID 19 is worse than any other flu. I think we just have an older, fatter and more sedentary population and there weaker one.
People love tp point out that Americans (actually the world) is getting more and more fat. We are thus getting more and more unhealthy.
Then a virus hits, people die, ... Shazam! How did that happen!?!?
We have also been counting the number a old people by age group and specifically the number of centenarians. They are getting up there chronologically , but it also means we have more people leaving longer in frail health and a virus comes around. Shazam! We are shocked!
When I was growing up people often died in the 60's and that was life. 70's and was though really old and 80's was considered very exceptional.
I don't get this virus thing. Any data mining or statistical package would tell you this would be the result.
