Russian Space Program Facing Internal Dissent

The Soyuz MS-17 spacecraft carrying the crew formed of Kathleen Rubins of NASA, Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov of the Russian space agency Roscosmos blasts off to the International Space Station (ISS) from the launchpad at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. Andrey Shelepin/GCTC

“Needless to say, you can see for yourself.”

There's a nasty, increasingly public battle that has engulfed a handful of former cosmonauts, a robot, and the current leader of Russia's space program, Dmitry Rogozin, in controversy.

The genesis of the dispute seems to be that some former cosmonauts have begun to speak out against Rogozin's leadership of Russia's space efforts—which has at times seemed self-serving—amid the rise of competitors like SpaceX and the decline of the country's aging infrastructure.

WNU Editor: I have mentioned it a few times before that Dmitry Rogozin was a follower of this blog at its beginning and my Twitter feed. He was always colorful in his comments. When I heard that he was appointed by Putin to head Russia's space program, I said to myself that he was the wrong person to head the space agency. Think of a Russian Trump running the space agency. Not surprised to now see this open rebellion among retired cosmonauts. They are reflecting the views of active cosmonauts and personnel involved the agency, and justifiably so. They see the agency adrift, and worry that it will no longer be relevant in the future. The tweet below by retired cosmonaut Maxim Suraev says it all. Hat tip to Dave for this story.

"Think of a Russian Trump running the space agency."

NASA was run better under Obama?

The plan was to get the replacement for the Space shuttle and then retire the shuttle.

Obama scrapped that plan and bought seats on Russian spacecraft.

How did Russia repay Obama? Supposedly with Collusion.

Under Obama NASA was for Muslim outreach and global warming.

I'll take Trump.

Maybe Obama was right? There are way more Jewish astronauts than Muslim astronauts.

Discwimination!

Or it could be that the USA has had a sizable Jewish population over the years that has honestly worked its way into all professions.

but Obama;s way is a solution in search of a problem. Way more profitable for a politician! Cha-Ching!
