This is what Marines ought to be training to do. Anyone with 1/4 a brain way back in 2001 knew that Using Marines and Army to chase down AQ was going to allow adversaries to gain ground on the US. Add in Obama, as implacable foe to the US military as any President since 1900 and we get China bursting into peer status almost overnight. Why? Obama put the DOD on a "do not disturb" list and kept troops fighting pointless battles that the idiot in chief George Bush started.

This tactic of the Marines reminds me of the offensive in WWII against the Japanese' strategy of fortifying islands to create a defense line to protect Japan. Raid after raid by overwhelmingly strong naval task forces struck the Japanese islands in the Pacific with near impunity. The Japanese simply could not keep them supplied and functioning.
China is a manufacturing powerhouse and their south china sea islands are not as widespread in area and number but they are sitting ducks. Like Japan, china's economy too depends on maritime trade.
