One in 10 people around the world has been infected with the coronavirus, according to the World Health Organization. Dr Michael Ryan, head of emergencies at the WHO, said its 'best estimate' was that 10 per cent of the global population has caught Covid-19.

He said the figures vary wildly from country to country, as well as between urban and rural settings, and different groups of people. The WHO estimate suggests 760million people have contracted the disease, based on current global population of about 7.6billion.

It also suggests Covid-19 kills around 0.14 per cent of patients, making it slightly deadlier than seasonal flu — which has a mortality rate of around 0.1 per cent. For comparison, the WHO's last estimate was that around 0.6 per cent of everyone who gets infected will die.
