Russia has almost completed a new command and control site from which its nuclear deterrence forces will be controlled, Vladimir Putin has announced, saying the systems must be “simple and reliable” like a Kalashnikov rifle.

The new facility has an improved chance of survivability in an attack, including a nuclear strike, ensuring that Russia remains in control of its armed forces, the president said on Wednesday.

This metric is crucial for nuclear deterrence, ensuring a retaliatory strike is launched in response to a decapitating first move and thus making such an escalation less likely.
