Dutch PM Announces A 5-Week Lockdown After Spike In Covid-19 Coronavirus Infections

New coronavirus infections in the country of 17 million increased by around 8,500 in the 24 hours to Monday morning, data released by national health authorities showed

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Netherlands will go into a tough second lockdown, with the closure of all schools and shops for at least five weeks, in a government-led push to fight the coronavirus, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said on Monday.

“The Netherlands is closing down,” he said to the sound of protesters banging pots and pans outside his office in The Hague.

"We realize the gravity of our decisions, right before Christmas.”

The measures, detailed in a rare live television address, include limiting gatherings to no more than two people, also at home.

An exception will be made for three days around Christmas, when three adult visitors will be permitted, he said.

We're going to allow three adult visitors around Christmas because for this three day period the virus will be deadly. Also, the lockdown is for five weeks and not for four or six weeks because in exactly five weeks the virus will be less contagious or deadly. The PM has made a deal with the virus that after five weeks it will become less deadly or contagious. He's got a promise from the virus that it will not do what it has done in the past which is to simply wait out the lockdowns while continuing to infect people indoors.

Sarcasm off. The lockdowns are and continue to be chief scourge and destroyer of lives. The virus pales in comparison. If we are to confront China about their handling about this, we must first get the knees of our governments off of our necks. Right now the primary enemy is our governments who have declared war on us!!

"We realize the gravity of our decisions right before Christmas." What "gravity" would this be? Is he missing a paycheck or a meal? Is his pension affected by any of this? Will he still have access to all of his servants to cook his food, drive him, clean his mansion, etc? Will his massive security detail remain active? If he wishes to have any kind of meeting is he going to limit the size of the gathering? I think everyone knows the answers to all of this.
