Nobody Really Knows Who Is Behind The US Cyber Attack

Robert Wheeler, Zero Hedge: Let's Be Honest... Nobody Really Knows Who Is Behind The US Cyber Attack

Amidst the reports of potential martial law, COVID hysteria, and arguments of stolen elections, there are accounts of an alleged “massive” hack attack against the U.S. government and major Fortune 500 companies.

While the details surrounding the hacking have yet to be released, it hasn’t stopped America’s judge, jury, and executioner – Mainstream Corporate Media – from declaring who the culprit is. Along with D.C. Swamp dwellers and Deep State stalwarts, MSM has reported the recent hacking as none other than Russia’s work.

WNU Editor: I have yet to see any evidence on who was responsible for this cyber attack. And the ones who should know have already made it clear that it will take some time to understand what systems were infiltrated, and who was responsible for it. But that is not stopping politicians and the media to put blame right now.

So they don't who did t or what was compromised. So its automatically Russia. And of course, "Trump's fault!!".

/fool me once... go screw yourself.

Russ,

Well said. "Fool me once..." Actually they've either lied or erred multiple times. Remember Iraqi WMD?? Once trust is destroyed it is VERY hard to get it back. Before aggressive action can be authorized or supported against anyone evidence must first be presented and evaluated. Our government will also need to acknowledge it's poor record.

Imposter,

The WMD's were shipped to Syria.

I believe i know, but you can't handle the truth. :) Thing is with covid19 there are alot of people making large amounts of money and these people all care about their cyber security to the point they have huge portfolios of cyber companies. It will be a private hack funded by wealthly people and highly likely will invovle the USA return to the Paris agreement.

The Russians... the Russians couldn't run hack if they wanted too. We all know they lack the hardware, the processing power, the modeling. Have you seen what they have to offer on the latest fighter jet construction, they can't even line up a simple overlay. Can't even hack their own government for ratings, hack the planet for support or hack their ally China to expose the truth. Hell i bet they couldn't even protect their own vaccine from theif rebranding and recreation, sucknik5.

The Wapo and the NY Times aren't reliable news sources and should never be trusted as a primary source for news of this type. If you can't figure this one out by now, I can't help you.

The same generally applies to most US government officials. Again, if you haven't figured this out by nowvI can't help you.

You often mention a lack of evidence when covering cyber attacks. Cautioning people about attribution is a good goal, but from what I understand and have seen, we are left having to trust the source doing the attribution, in this case the NSA, and FBI. Contrary to your linked article, they are attributing this to Russian state-sponsored hackers. If Zero-Hedge has evidence that the NSA is lying, they should provide it.

People doing attributions (identifying the source of the hack) INTENTIONALLY don't share their methods of identification so as to not tip off hackers on how to obscure their tracks.

We are left in the nu-enviable position of needing to trust these authorities.

I do trust that the methods they have for attribution exceed our own, which is limited to reading headlines and articles.

If you (War News Editor) have any tips or corrections to my comments please reply, as I'd be interested. Otherwise I'm left thinking you are missing the point, or lacking understanding on this topic.

It was Russia. How do we know?
1. If Iran, Trump would have shit a brick tweeting
2. If China Trump would have shit a brick tweeting.
3. if Russia: Trump would remain silent as always does

Who is responsible?

Russia's foreign intelligence service, the SVR, is believed to have carried out the hack, according to cybersecurity experts who cite the extremely sophisticated nature of the attack. Russia has denied involvement.

President Trump has been silent about the hack and his administration has not attributed blame. However, U.S. intelligence agencies have started briefing members of Congress, and several lawmakers have said the information they've seen points toward Russia.

Included are members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, where Chairman James Inhofe, a Republican from Oklahoma, and the top Democrat on the panel, Jack Reed of Rhode Island, issued a joint statement Thursday saying "the cyber intrusion appears to be ongoing and has the hallmarks of a Russian intelligence operation."

After several days of saying relatively little, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency on Thursday delivered an ominous warning, saying the hack "poses a grave risk" to federal, state and local governments as well as private companies and organizations.

In addition, CISA said that removing the malware will be "highly complex and challenging for organizations."

The episode is the latest in what has become a long list of suspected Russian electronic incursions into other nations under President Vladimir Putin. Multiple countries have previously accused Russia of using hackers, bots and other means in attempts to influence elections in the U.S. and elsewhere.

U.S. national security agencies made major efforts to prevent Russia from interfering in the 2020 election. But those same agencies seem to have been blindsided by the hackers who have had months to dig around inside U.S. government systems.

You realize the Chinese have all your private information after the 2015 OPM hack under Obama. Do you remember him condemning anyone quickly or loudly?

"The first breach, named "X1" by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), was discovered March 20, 2014 when a third party notified DHS of data exfiltration from OPM's network"

So this went on and on and on and I do not remember Obummer addressing it loudly.

The right wing Trump supporting NY Post says this:

Russia-backed hackers infiltrated internal email systems at the US Treasury and Commerce departments, spying on communications for months, according to reports on Sunday.

In addition to the Treasury and the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration, government intelligence officials fear the hackers may have gotten into the records of other federal agencies, Reuters reported, citing three anonymous sources briefed on the matter.

“This is a huge cyber espionage campaign targeting the U.S. government and its interests,” one source told the wire service.

The FBI is investigating the breaches by a group working for the Russian Foreign intelligence service, SVR, according to The Washington Post.

The group, known as APT29 or Cozy Bear, was also behind a hack of the White House and State Department during the Obama administration, the report said.

It’s not clear exactly what information was accessed during the more recent hacks. But the cyber break-ins appeared so serious that the National Security Council met at the White House to discuss it on Saturday, sources told Reuters.

The Trump administration acknowledged on Sunday that hackers acting on behalf of a foreign government — almost certainly a Russian intelligence agency, according to federal and private experts — broke into a range of key government networks, including in the Treasury and Commerce Departments, and had free access to their email systems.

Officials said a hunt was on to determine if other parts of the government had been affected by what looked to be one of the most sophisticated, and perhaps among the largest, attacks on federal systems in the past five years. Several said national security-related agencies were also targeted, though it was not clear whether the systems contained highly classified material.

The Trump administration said little in public about the hack, which suggested that while the government was worried about Russian intervention in the 2020 election, key agencies working for the administration — and unrelated to the election — were actually the subject of a sophisticated attack that they were unaware of until recent weeks.

The 2015 OPM hack started in late 2013.

You know what Obama did?

"OPM is now offering what it calls "a comprehensive suite of monitoring and protection services" to those impacted."

For 6 measly months.

When Yahoo or other corporations get hacked, they offer the same thing.

So Obummer did not do anything that a corporation can do or does.

Fess up, You are not really Fred. You are really a Chinese hacker that assumed his name.

And now that the Orion vulnerability is public, other governments and cybercriminals will use it to penetrate vulnerable networks. I can guarantee you that the NSA is using the SVR’s hack to infiltrate other networks; why would they not? (Do any Russian organizations use Orion? Probably.)

While this is a security failure of enormous proportions, it is not, as Senator Richard Durban said, “virtually a declaration of war by Russia on the United States” While President-elect Biden said he will make this a top priority, it’s unlikely that he will do much to retaliate.

The reason is that, by international norms, Russia did nothing wrong. This is the normal state of affairs. Countries spy on each other all the time. There are no rules or even norms, and it’s basically “buyer beware”. The US regularly fails to retaliate against espionage operations – such as China’s hack of the Office of Personal Management (OPM) and previous Russian hacks – because we do it, too. Speaking of the OPM hack, the then director of national intelligence, James Clapper, said: “You have to kind of salute the Chinese for what they did. If we had the opportunity to do that, I don’t think we’d hesitate for a minute.”

We don’t, and I’m sure NSA employees are grudgingly impressed with the SVR. The US has by far the most extensive and aggressive intelligence operation in the world. The NSA’s budget is the largest of any intelligence agency. It aggressively leverages the US’s position controlling most of the internet backbone and most of the major internet companies. Edward Snowden disclosed many targets of its efforts around 2014, which then included 193 countries, the World Bank, the IMF and the International Atomic Energy Agency. We are undoubtedly running an offensive operation on the scale of this SVR operation right now, and it’ll probably never be made public. In 2016, President Obama boasted that we have “more capacity than anybody both offensively and defensively.”

He may have been too optimistic about our defensive capability. The US prioritizes and spends many times more on offense than on defensive cybersecurity. In recent years, the NSA has adopted a strategy of “persistent engagement”, sometimes called “defending forward”. The idea is that instead of passively waiting for the enemy to attack our networks and infrastructure, we go on the offensive and disrupt attacks before they get to us. This strategy was credited with foiling a plot by the Russian Internet Research Agency to disrupt the 2018 elections.

And the Fool is still at it 4:11.

The hack is known and the government has taken action and presumably will take more action There was the shut down of SIPR net. They did not start up SIPR net without making patches.

Maybe you would know about SIPR net if you actual read the articles you link or paste, actually had friends in the intel community, or actually had friends.
