Among the many problems the Corps is trying to rectify in the wake of this accident, troops inside did not have breathing devices.

Always bad to lose people, freaking training accidents
Think every year the US loses like around 5-10 in such accidents. It's to be expected,I guess, but this particular instance was double bad as they would not only have lived (most likely)if they had the gear, but they could also have practiced a real top over

We had sequestration, because no judge will allow non-discretionary budget to be cut. You cannot cut welfare, which makes up over half the budget. So really you cannot solve the deficit or the debt by only cutting "discretionary" spending.
