VOA: Leaving Afghanistan Will Make Counterterrorism 'Extremely Difficult', Top General Says

WASHINGTON - The United States will face substantial hurdles if it has to return to Afghanistan — even briefly — to deal with new or growing terror threats once the military completes the planned withdrawal of forces from the country, a top U.S. general told lawmakers.

The warning Tuesday from the commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East and parts of South Asia comes as military planners are still working on how to bring home all 2,500 to 3,500 troops in Afghanistan starting next month, ending two decades of war.

"I don't want to make light of it. I don't put on rose-colored glasses and say it's going to be easy to do," said U.S. Central Command's General Kenneth "Frank" McKenzie Jr. as he told members of the House Armed Services Committee of the possible need for future counterterrorism missions.

What the (I wanted to put in swear words here) general means is (a) our humint is shit and (b) he will carry water for the Democrats.

Seriously? Seriously?! If jihadis cannot meet and greet in Afghanistan than is slows their planning and reduced the number of operations they can conduct in a year? They have basing in Pakistan, Iran, Badia Desert, South American Tri-border area, Yemen, Somalia, about anywhere in Africa, so Afghanistan means all that much? He is shitting us.

Al Shabab not being taken care of for 14 years. US allies surround Somalia. They are Ethiopia, Kenya and the Somalia government. The US has good access from the IO and Djibouti. The only reason being is that Al Shabab is around is that the US dies not have enough intel often enough, Al Shabab runs better intel the through spies or the US is just not trying. We have aircraft , satellites, the NSA, drones, spec ops and some humint.

911 was planned in art in Hamburg. How sure is the general and others about there are not cells in Europe still?

The "We need Afghanistan to keep track of terrorism" is very, very weak tea.

I see promotions in the general's future. He is a very quick understudy of water carrier Austen.

2500 troops can be pulled out with about 25 C-17 flights. Their gear in another 25 flights. What’s that a couple days of flights?
Put a couple B-52s and a few armed drones on over watch covering the withdrawal and get it done quick.

The Humvees, MRAPS and other stuff?

At the very least you have to gut the MRAPS. Some of them are just wild weasels on wheels. An MRAP is almost every bit as valuable as stealing a plane.

IMO they should Retreat to Tajikistan and fly out of there. Maybe they could turnover some of the lobotomized vehicles to the Tajiks. They are going to need them. Russia went into Afghanistan in part because of Islamic preacher s sneaking into the USSR and proselytizing They also rotated out troops of Muslim ethnicity out of Afghanistan, because of problems ...,

like reliability

The Chinese will do fine. They will use a combination of payoffs, brute force, genocide and sticking to a few strategic areas and letting the Pashtun keep the rest for their bacha bazi time,
