NATO is of no use to the USA anymore. Fracking has ended our obsession with Middle East oil and interventions if only people would see it as clearly as President Trump.
Russia is a threat to a few European states and not to the USA outside nukes. Germany sees no threat from Russia, refuses to credibly defend itself so why should the USA?
NATO won’t help the USA with China since Germany is determined to deepen its China engagement and would veto any NATO action against China.
The USA needs strategic ties with about 10 of the 30 NATO nations, all maritime stations.
