National Post: Leader of world's largest vaccine manufacturer flees India after threats from rich and powerful

The CEO of the Serum Institute in India, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturers, has fled India, claiming he and his family had been threatened by some of the most powerful people in the country.

In an interview with the Times of London, published on Saturday May 1, Adar Poonawalla said he flew to London after enduring phone calls from chief ministers of Indian states, business leaders and others demanding that they receive the vaccine first.

“‘Threats’ is an understatement,” Poonawalla said. “The level of expectation and aggression is really unprecedented.” The Serum Institute has been producing over 600 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine month, supplied around the world. It is also responsible for supplying 90 per cent of India’s vaccines, as the second COVID-19 wave ravages the country, killing up to 4,000 people a day.

I guess I'll have to change my mind's image of India. Disappointing.

India had approximately 414K "cases" yesterday. This is in a population of approximately 1.4 billion. As I understand it, the US record for "cases" was approximately 185K in a country with a population of approximately 332 million. Adjusting for population size this isn't that much different and yet with a very few isolated and temporary exceptions we and our healthcare system easily handled this.

India is am up and coming major world power. Why can't they do at least as well as we've managed to do so far? India is in a tense situation with China. Then all of a sudden they get hit with the virus to this extent. Is this a coincidence?

Why are they threatening harm to the CEO of a virus manufacturer? Of course the elites will always get treated first. In America our elites wouldn't need to threaten as they already know they're going first. Maybe India is less corrupt.

Why are they so excited over a vaccine? Surely theirs isn't superior to the ones we're getting here in the US. The ones we're getting have efficacy but they carry significant risks. They are NOT a panacea and health wise whether or not someone should actually get one will depend on each person's unique situation. The clamoring to get a treatment with medium efficacy that carries not insignificant risks doesn't make any sense.

In America many are getting the vaccine because it is or will be necessary for employment and basic functioning. Need government services? Need to renew a professional license? Proof of vaccination will be required. Essentially protection against a pathogen is a secondary factor if figuring in at all. For Indian elites to issue threats to try and get theirs, they must have some vaccine!!

Anon (2:19),

To answer your questions.

Did you get your vaccine? Yes.

Why did you get it? I already know they're time is coming when being vaccinated is going to be required to do pretty much anything. Need government services? Wish to renew or keep a professional license you need to feed your family? Want to travel by plane or ship? Want or need a passport? Want a corporate or government job? Want a promotion within an organization? Want a government contract? I can go on!! Once the government implements this, there's going to be a mad dash to get vaccinated and not enough supply. As for your ability to function in the interim, they aren't going to care about you or your family!! To me the need to be proactive and get ahead of the curve was the primary motivation.

With that said there are health factors. Based upon my individual situation it's probably 50/50 whether to get or not to get. As an intangible, I do NOT like being coerced by the government or their propaganda pieces to do something. As such, if the health of myself or my family were the only factor, I would not have been vaccinated.

Something else to think about, for a 20 year old who is in good health, the health risks associated with the vaccine appear to outweigh the risks of getting the disease. Does your 20 old Want to attend college? Does your 20 year Want a job? All of these are going to require COVID vaccinations.

To get vaccinated or not is an individual decision that each person needs to prayerfully consider. I've shared with you my thoughts on this and how I reached my decision. I pray it was the right one and I pray you make the right decisions as well. I hope this helps.
