Reuters: EU mulls military training mission to steady Mozambique
BRUSSELS, May 6 (Reuters) - The European Union will consider sending a military training mission to Mozambique to help the government withstand a growing insurgency, and Portugal is already sending troops, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Thursday.
Mozambique's government has been facing an Islamist insurgency since 2017 and rebels have stepped up attacks in the past year, threatening natural gas projects that are aimed at transforming the impoverished country's economy.
Mozambique wrote to the EU last year to ask for help in training its armed forces to battle the insurgency, and Borrell said it was important for the bloc to make up its mind quickly.
EU defence ministers discussed the possibility of a mission in Brussels on Thursday, but took no decision.

They can reposition the forces from Afghanistan to Mozambique.
On the plus side, there is no Pakistan to charge transit fees. Also Pakistan is not right next door to Mozambique providing funds, training, intel, safe rear area or paramilitary advisers.
On the minus side the EU is run by Macron and Merkel. Macron had his Michael Dukakis moment on a submarine. If you have to cut propaganda video showing you are a tough guy, you are not. Then there is Merkel. She announced about 6 months ago that she would leave in a year? She is the leader whose soldiers train with broom sticks, whose Navy does not sail and whose air force is grounded. ?Merkel will help Mozambique when she has been found wanting in energy, defense and immigration policies? The minus side is very bad.
