VOA: Pakistan: No More Military Bases for US Afghan Mission

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan ruled out Tuesday the possibility of again providing its military bases to the United States for future counter-terrorism operations in Afghanistan after U.S. troops leave the conflict-torn neighbor by September 11.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi made the remarks to reporters in Islamabad, explaining that his government has adopted a policy that allows it to become "only partners in peace” and not join any future U.S. war.

“No sir, we do not intend to allow boots on the ground and no [U.S.] bases are being transferred to Pakistan,” Qureshi said when asked whether his government is under pressure to give military bases to the U.S.

"It looks like Pakistan is positioning itself to make sure that if the Afghan government is facing defeat on the battlefield, no one can come in to save them."

We were fighting The Taliban, who were and are allies of Pakistan. We were literally paying our enemy billions of dollars a year to leverage our payments to them against us in asymmetric warfare.

Bush pressured Pakistan to go into Swat Valley. We thought, if the Pakistanis went against Taliban rear areas outside of Afghanistan, they would be defeated. The Pakistanis made one show of it and promptly ceased the charade of attacking the Taliban.

Obama gave it the old college try. His generals recommended a surge. Obama half-assed the general's recommendations. We surged, but the Pakistanis also surged. The surge in Iraq worked despite Iran also surging, because the Anbar tribes had enough of Al Qaeda atrocities and sided with the U.S. It was a one-two punch. It was a surge combined with locals fighting back against Al Qaeda. Did the locals in Afghanistan fight as hard as the Sunni Anbar tribes? The Anbar tribes sided with us and the leader of the tribes was assassinated and his replacement was also assassinated only inside of half a year. You have to have balls of steel to be the 3rd guy.

So after 15 years, Bush and Obama, and no victory I believe Trump was right to pull the U.S. out. I hope the Pakistanis reap the whirlwind and their country turns to ash.
