Zero Hedge: US Already Planning How To "Choke" Chinese Submarines In Case Of Conflict
A hugely significant weakness and set-back for the Chinese Navy and particularly its submarine capability was featured in recent Nikkei analysis, which found that its coastal system already has geography working against it, while at the same time giving Japan and Taiwan a significant edge.
"When you look at China’s submarine bases, every single one of them has a fair bit of shallow water that their submarines have to transit through in order to get to deep water," former US Navy submariner Tom Shugart explained to Nikkei Asia.

WNU Editor: The Chinese know the limitations on their subs. that is why in a run-up to a conflict these Chinese subs will be deployed outside of these choke-points.

Most will have to Traverse the shallows many times, the others are noisy. Few are as good as their Asian peers.
China or will set up "SOSUS" nets themselves at chokepoints. They will not move subs in isolation. The US might be better (For how long, who knows?), but to expect a turkey shoot would be a mistake. Chinese subs in the South China Sea will have some homefield advantage due to Chinese bases there.
Any American sub tracking the Chinese cannot track the Russians in the Pacific or escort a carrier or amphib group. It is not only a question of professional and technical expertise, but of numbers, strategy and political will. Are there enough American subs to cover passage through the Phillipines or south of it? The Americans have about 73 attack subs to split in the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf. There can't be more than 15 or 20 on station off the West coast at any time normally. Is it enough for what the Chinese can throw at them with or without a favorable kiil ratio?
The spines of European and American politicians seem to be stiffening some, but is it enough and timely?
Is the Great White Supremacist Hunt going to affect the US military to a significant degree like a Stalin's purges affected the Russian military?
Chinese subs are junk (pun)
