For the past 1½ years, on 18 trips off the Virginia and North Carolina coasts, sailors and shipyard workers from Newport News have prepped the Navy’s newest carrier for deployment — 27% over its original budget and years behind schedule.
The costliest single item on the Department of Defense’s shopping list, the USS Gerald R Ford has been on a fast track to launch a series of new technologies intended to boost the Navy’s striking power for at least the next 50 years.
It is a fast track that started two decades ago.
It is a fast track that’s seen delays installing key components of the ship, as on-shore testing revealed unexpected problems that required hundreds of millions of dollars to fix and that forced workers at Newport News Shipbuilding to redo finished parts of the 1,092-foot long carrier, hundreds of pages of government budget documents, Navy assessments, oversight reports and Congressional hearings show.

WNU Editor: Critics of the USS Gerald Ford were always told that because this was a new aircraft carrier class, problems and delays (as well as costs) were going to occur. That made a sense at the beginning, but after years behind schedule and almost 30% over budget. Add in the fact that four of its massive elevastors are still not working and shock trials have been delayed for years .... I think a lot of people are saying enough is enough. The above post is a good analysis on what happened.

Dave Ress can talk until he is blue in the face and make everything clear as mud. You can get a lot of college and still end up knowing very little of import. Mr. Ress is not DAWIA certified. It was a disappointingly written article. Congress mandates that the DOD and service members working in procurement or acquisition be DAWIA certified. Should not reporters covering the military acquire and use the concepts and vocabulary used by people in the field? Readers would pick up the vocabulary over time like they do with articles on science or business. Seems like the reporter and the news agencies are dong the public a great disservice.
Well, USS Gerald Ford remind me the B-29 problem during WWII. Full of over cost, running late and even after being built need a sorting out to know which are the good one's... Why? because the B-29 has too much new things which each one was bringing a problem. Same thing with the aircraft carrier. The blame has to go to the navy which has not learn the old lesson.
That said,USS Gerald Ford could be a good boat. We need to be patient.

Doesnt really matter, the US has more then one carrier. This one will be operational for a very long time and once it is, well its best they get it right to begin with. Better when you have issues like this because then everyone dismisses the warship as a dud. End of the day the issue of companies implementing failure points in their designs are global. Greed is the root of all evil and whats the rush?
