During Its Lifetime 4,000 Missiles Were Fired At the SR-71 Blackbird

Reuters National Interest: 4,000 Missiles Were Fired At the SR-71 Blackbird. None Ever Hit.

The reconnaissance jet was never shot down, or even hit, over the course of its entire lifespan, although it’s been estimated that more than 4,000 missiles were fired at it over the decades.

The SR-71, best known as the Blackbird, was one of the most famous jets ever flown by the United States military.

The reconnaissance jet was never shot down, or even hit, over the course of its entire lifespan, although it’s been estimated that more than 4,000 missiles were fired at it over the decades.

The Blackbird had its first flight in 1964 and was retired in the late 1990s.

According to Aviation Geek Club, a story recently surfaced of what’s believed to be the first time a missile was fired at the famed plane. At least, that’s how that flight was described by Aviation Geek Club.

I was with the 9th marines on Okinawa in 1976. The blackbird was stationed at the kadena airbase near our central island training area. There was a black poisonous snake on the island we called the habu. they were black and we ran across them in the darkest thickest parts of the jungle. they were demons to us. on several occasions we would be in the field and see a shadow overhead, look up and see these other worldly dark silhouettes coming in to land. it made no noise. we called the blackbird the habu. to this day I call it the Habu.

If you have enough of a lead on a missile and can out run it, why not turn off the ECM?

ECM emission can be analyzed. Why give them that?

Which cost more? The Black bird program or the program to fire 4,000 missiles. If it is the latter trigger them often and let them bleed red ink.
