No word from the government or the media on what caused this collapse, but it is painfully obvious that explosives are the reason. But why? and who? Terrorists?

Curious also that the cowed population are not demanding answers. This nation is doomed.

It was not terrorism. Spouse asked the reason why. I told them to wait 2 days, 2 weeks or 2 months and then they will have a satisfactory answer. Until then there will be a lot of clickbait.

Building standards change. One question is what kind of rebar they out into the structure. They started putting coated rebar on roads a few decades back. they didn't do that before. With all the salt put on the roads during the winter, it soaks into the pour and tears up the rebar. One could expect roads to last a little longer now. Question is was the rebar coated. There is the question of water damage and of course of the soil and the footings for the building.

I do not see a political angle to this collapse, so I do expect an honest answer unlike the Obama pedestrian bridge collapse in Florida.

I expect the answer to be mundane.

Horrible situation. The building was constructed in 1981. USA Today reported that there were a string of lawsuits in the '90's related to cracks, leaks and actual sinking. It's pretty clear that the collapse was due to cumulative structural failure. The question now is why was it ignored for 40 years and who allowed it?

Thanks Russ

Have you seen the video of the collapse? It came down like a demolition. Take a look: https://youtu.be/7KNwMSuwQ8w

Your panting hard from running up and lugubriously telling the news.

Do you know what a a normal collapse due to a building losing its footing due to sinking looks like?

Maybe you should be going to a specialist website for Civil Engineers or such to see what they are saying.

There is enough real shit out that that we do not need to be making shit up.

Now there are questions on how effective restoration is.

So you see some spalling. You chip round the spalling area to get rid of loose stuff. You chip down to the steel. you prime the steel to protect it and add concrete back on. What about the concrete just above and just below that you could not get to?

"Surfside officials, including Vice Mayor Tina Paul, said Thursday morning that the town was in the process of reviewing what structural improvements, if any, the building's 40-year re-certification recommended. The re-certification is required by Miami-Dade County code for any buildings that are 40 years old. And those structural improvements may have included concrete restoration, as some of the building’s residents have reported."

Has Washington Post excerpt which covers saltwater corrosion and spalling and settling that at times was 2 mm per year.

Assuming it was constant ( no idea) the total settling over 40 years would be 3 inches.

Buildings are like boats. They float. Maybe they should have some Russian designers. Russians designed the T34. It floated. On ground. German tanks no so much.
